About the role

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a ED Phlebotomist - Part Time, Nights - Clinical Labs-ED Medical Asst - Part-Time - Monday - Friday.

Responsibilities

  • Phlebotomy/Capillary Collection
    • Properly greets patient.
    • Properly identifies patient.
    • Prepares patient in an appropriate position.
    • Assembles appropriate material (tubes, gloves, etc.).
    • Selects appropriate tubes for tests ordered.
    • Follows infection control procedures (gloves, hand washing).
    • Follows order of draw in multiple specimen collection.
    • Performs proper site sterilization techniques.
    • Properly labels and documents tubes and label sets.
    • Knows appropriate site selection and exclusions (e.g., scarring, mastectomy).
    • Follows proper procedure for blood culture collection.
    • Follows policies and procedures for sharps disposal.
    • Normal draw technique.
    • Finger stick technique.
    • Heel stick technique.
    • Butterfly technique.
    • Keeps a clean, neat and professional working appearance.
    • Keeps a clean, neat and professional working phlebotomy tray.
    • Ensures patient is left in a safe manner, bed rails up.
    • Performs EKGs correctly.
  • Customer Service and Patient Care
    • Explains procedure and reassures patient.
    • Protects privacy of patient (e.g., closing curtains).
    • Protects confidentiality of patient.
    • Refers patient questions to appropriate personnel (e.g., nursing, supervisors).
    • Identifies any additional needs of patient and acts accordingly.
    • Reports to supervisor or nursing any unusual condition of patient and documents on label set and in computer.
    • Prioritizes draws.
    • Identifies self, wears hospital ID badge, and clarifies role to patient in an understandable and respectful fashion.
    • May be required to draw outpatients at off-site locations.
  • Other Functions and Performance Expectations
    • Maintains a consistent pattern of attendance.
    • Reports to assigned area on time for scheduled shift.
    • Adheres to hospital/department dress code; arrives appropriately dressed, well groomed and neat.
    • Completes all hospital requirements at designated times (e.g., annual assessment, educational modules, MedNetTra).
    • Conforms to policies regarding confidentiality of information.
    • Follows call-in procedure when sick, late or absent.
  • Teamwork/Collaboration
    • Communicates in a fashion that respects the individuality and dignity of each person.
    • Promotes dialogue that is honest and non-confrontational.
    • When there are disagreements, makes a personal attempt to resolve the problem collaboratively.
    • Demonstrates through actions that patient and/or departmental goals are a priority.

  • Central Receiving (Specimen Processing) — as needed
    • Understands general computer operation for this area.
    • Prepares documents in computer for deletion, addition or changes in order.
    • Properly documents all pertinent patient information.
    • Verifies and processes samples in an organized and timely fashion.
    • Delivers all STAT requests to sections separately.
    • Notes in computer any specimen integrity issues.
    • Relays to supervisor any conflict in specimen identification or labeling.
    • Handles equipment in accordance with laboratory policy.
    • Completes work or explains to coverage the appropriate stage of processing and outstanding issues.
    • Identifies need for written (faxed) requests for patient results from non-staff physicians.
    • Knows proper procedure for picking up samples from Ambulatory Surgery area.
    • Knows computer downtime procedure.
    • Handles light stock and ensures adequate supplies are in the area.
    • Works collaboratively with other staff to maintain cleanliness of work environment and equipment (e.g., carts, EKG machine).
    • Assists with prevention of transmission of infection by adhering to Standard Precautions, including effective handwashing techniques.
    • Recognizes safety hazards and acts promptly and appropriately.
  • Reference Laboratory Sendouts
    • Organizes work to complete in a timely fashion.
    • Understands lab requisition and specimen integrity requirements.
    • Investigates unusual tests for proper collection and transport.
    • Identifies appropriate reference lab for analysis.
    • Notifies supervisor of unusual issues or specimens.
    • Directs to pathologist requests requiring approval.
    • Informs coverage of appropriate stage of processing and any outstanding issues.
    • Is able to transmit electronic orders.
    • Knows proper specimen submission to reference lab.
    • Knows manual billing process for “Miscellaneous” reference tests.
  • Resulting and Reporting
    • Properly faxes reports to physician offices.
    • Knows complete process for manual and electronic reporting.
    • Handles phone conversations in a polite and complete manner.
    • Notifies supervisor of any unusual report or phone request.
    • Distributes manual reports to appropriate location.
    • Assists in processing in outpatient area when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma.
  • Phlebotomy Certificate preferred or other equivalent documentation and/or 5 years of experience.
  • General office skills (typing, filing, phone).
  • General computer skills.
  • General organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Knowledge of Standard Precautions.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Pay

The salary range for the role is $30.00 – $30.00 per hour. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
