About the Role

The purpose of the position is to provide staff support in an educational environment, with a focus on bilingual communication support to teachers, staff, and students. This includes interpreting and translating classroom assignments, parent and student communications, and other school activities.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS positively.
  • Provides bilingual communication support to teachers, staff, and students through interpreting and translating data and information.
  • Affords individual support to students for whom English is a secondary language, aiding in comprehension and transition into an English-speaking environment.
  • Communicates directly with parents and children to convey education and school-related information, ensuring full comprehension of all exchanges.
  • Maintains classroom safety by monitoring activities and behavior of children during and in the absence of classroom teachers.
  • Assists teachers in supervising learning activities, circulating within the classroom, and providing assistance and learning support to students.
  • Delivers one-on-one instruction to students in the target language, reinforcing skills introduced by the teacher.
  • Evaluates students' work, teaching individually and in small groups based on instructional guidelines.
  • Manages student behavior and classroom order, enforcing school and classroom rules; escorts students to time-out and/or the principal's office.
  • Assists in preparing lesson plans and teachers' pre-planning sessions; provides input and assistance in developing classroom activities and learning tools.
  • Diagnoses student learning and communication deficiencies, monitoring progress and documenting learning activities and diagnoses.
  • Prepares or assists in preparing instructional materials; performs support tasks such as copying materials, laminating items, typing correspondence, and filing paperwork and documentation.
  • Coordinates with media center staff for classroom learning resources; sets up equipment in classrooms for teacher's instructional studies.
  • Assists in preparing classroom bulletin boards, decorations, displays of student activities, and other classroom objectives.
  • Prepares instructional reports and completes required forms, schedules, and other data as required; maintains attendance records and assigns student seating.
  • Ensures appropriate student conduct during assigned duties such as hallways, lunchroom, restrooms, and bus duty; escorts students to designated activity areas.
  • Assists in various labs, providing assistance to teachers and instruction/information to students; translates lesson plans and other information to students for better understanding and comprehension.
  • Keeps up-to-date on current technology used by OCPS and attends training to ensure skill levels are at the required level for the current position.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of student information, including entering student scores and other data using a computer terminal.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree or higher, or at least sixty (60) semester hours from an accredited institution of higher education (official transcript required to validate education). Passing the paraprofessional certification exam can substitute for the educational requirement to meet the highly qualified status. All applicants must be highly qualified prior to starting employment with Orange County Public Schools.

Ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work, and effectively attend to the needs of school age children; previous vocational training or work experience in a licensed childcare environment preferred.

Demonstrated written and oral linguistic skills in English and in a minimum of one (1) target language (Spanish, French, Creole, etc.). Additional HRS training preferred.
