ECVECC Resident and Out-of-Hours Staff Clinician The Ralph is the UK’s largest independent multidisciplinary specialist referral centre. Based in Marlow, southeast England, we are a busy hospital with around 260 team members, excellent facilities and a broad referral caseload. We are looking for two veterinary surgeons to join our established Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) service: ▪️ECVECC Resident, starting July 2027 ▪️Out-of-Hours Staff Clinician, starting as soon as possible, with flexibility for the right candidate Both positions offer the opportunity to work within one of the UK’s largest and busiest referral ECC services, alongside an experienced and supportive team. Our Emergency and Critical Care service Our ECC service operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year. We care for a large and varied caseload of emergency and critically ill referral patients, working from our dedicated Dog and Cat Intensive Care Units. The team currently includes five ACVECC/ECVECC Diplomates, two residents, three interns, four ECC Staff Clinicians and a large team of dedicated ECC nurses. We offer advanced intensive care facilities, including mechanical ventilation, high-flow oxygen therapy, point-of-care ultrasound and transfusion medicine. Our clinicians are regularly involved in complex case management and advanced procedures. As a dedicated referral hospital, we do not provide first-opinion emergency care. Our ECC team benefits from a substantial caseload of complex referrals and close collaboration with specialists across our multidisciplinary services, including Anaesthesia and Analgesia, Cardiology, Dentistry, Diagnostic Imaging, Internal Medicine, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Oncology, Ophthalmology and Surgery. Our Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation team also has a keen interest in helping ICU patients. Position 1: ECC Out-of-Hours Staff Clinician We are also recruiting an experienced veterinary surgeon to join our team of Out-of-Hours Staff Clinicians. This role is suited to someone with strong emergency and critical care skills who enjoys clinical responsibility, managing complex cases and working as part of a specialist referral team. Our Out-of-Hours Staff Clinicians work at Advanced Practitioner level, with considerable clinical autonomy and responsibility. Formal RCVS Advanced Practitioner status is desirable but not essential. We would particularly welcome applications from experienced emergency clinicians holding a postgraduate ECC qualification. However, we are equally interested in hearing from veterinary surgeons with substantial first-opinion emergency experience or previous referral hospital experience who are keen to develop further. The working pattern includes weekday and weekend nights, alongside weekend and Bank Holiday day shifts. During these day shifts, you will work alongside an ECC Diplomate. Overnight, an ECC Diplomate is available for remote clinical advice and support, including by video call. Our Out-of-Hours Staff Clinicians are also welcome to participate in the service’s teaching and professional development activities, including remotely, where this fits around their working patterns. We welcome full-time and part-time applications and are open to discussing suitable working arrangements. We would like our new colleague to join us as soon as possible, although we can be flexible for the right person. Applications will be reviewed as they arrive, and the position will remain open until filled. Position 2: ECVECC Resident We are inviting applications for our three-year ECVECC-approved residency training programme, commencing in July 2027. Our busy referral caseload provides extensive exposure to emergency medicine and intensive care, alongside opportunities to develop clinical decision-making, practical skills and experience in managing critically ill patients. The programme includes weekly Board Review and Journal Club sessions, multidisciplinary learning-from-case discussions, monthly intern and resident seminars, and other structured teaching activities. Our hospital is also increasingly active in clinical research. Residents work a mixture of weekdays, weekends and nights as part of their clinical training. Who are we looking for? Applicants Should Have ▪️At least two years of post-qualification experience. ▪️Completed a general rotating internship and/or undertaken further training in ECC. ▪️A strong commitment to developing their clinical knowledge and skills in emergency and critical care. ▪️A collaborative, compassionate approach to patient care and teamwork. Completion of a dedicated ECC internship would be particularly desirable. Application deadline: Sunday 22 November 2026. Interviews are provisionally planned for November and December 2026. Working at The Ralph The Ralph was founded with a clear mission: to set the standard for small animal referral veterinary care with an ethical conscience. Clinical excellence matters here. So does how care is delivered. We care for every patient as we would our own animal companion. We value our people and prioritise their wellbeing. Kindness and compassion are central to how we work with patients, carers and each other. We are not part of a corporate veterinary group. This gives us considerable freedom to make decisions based on what we believe is right for our patients, carers, colleagues and hospital. We offer competitive remuneration and benefits, including generous support for continuing professional development. Packages will reflect the position and can be discussed with suitable candidates. Living and working in Marlow The Ralph is based in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, on the River Thames between Henley and Windsor. Our hospital is just off the A404, with easy access to the M4 and M40 motorways and good connections to London. Heathrow Airport is approximately 25 minutes away.
