Position Summary

The Exceptional Children (EC) Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while promoting student growth in academic, behavioral, and functional areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instruction & Student Support: Develop and implement IEPs aligned with student needs and grade-level standards
    Provide direct, specially designed instruction
    Differentiate instruction to support diverse learning needs
    Utilize evidence-based practices to improve student outcomes
    Support students' social-emotional and behavioral development

  • Compliance & Documentation: Ensure all IEPs are compliant with IDEA and state regulations
    Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation (IEPs, progress reports, data collection)
    Monitor and report student progress toward IEP goals
    Participate in IEP meetings, reevaluations, and eligibility determinations
    Ensure accommodations and modifications are implemented with fidelity

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with general education teachers, coaches, specialists to support access to the curriculum
    Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress
    Work with related service providers (e.g., speech, OT, PT) to coordinate services
    Serve as a case manager for assigned students

  • Behavior Support: Collect and analyze behavioral data to inform instruction and interventions
    Assist in the development and implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) when appropriate
    Support Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field (Master's preferred)

  • Valid state teaching license in Special Education or must be eligible to obtain licensure in the state of North Carolina

  • Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills
