Earthjustice seeks a Senior Attorney to join the Fossil Fuels Program in New Orleans, Louisiana. We use the power of the law to challenge the onslaught of new oil and gas infrastructure development that threatens climate, communities, and the environment.

About the role

This position will focus on oil and gas infrastructure and related legal strategies to protect public health, the environment, and climate stability. The Senior Attorney will lead litigation, advocacy, and coalition-building efforts to halt harmful fossil fuel projects and advance a just transition to clean energy.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and litigate high-impact cases challenging oil and gas infrastructure projects, including pipelines, export terminals, and petrochemical facilities.
  • Collaborate with communities, tribes, and partner organizations to amplify their voices in legal and policy battles.
  • Work with legislative and regulatory bodies to advocate for stronger protections against fossil fuel expansion.
  • Provide legal expertise and mentorship to junior attorneys and legal fellows.
  • Engage in public speaking, media outreach, and writing to advance program goals.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree and active membership in a state bar (preference for Louisiana or ability to waive in).
  • Minimum of 7 years of litigation experience, with a strong background in environmental, administrative, or public interest law.
  • Demonstrated expertise in federal and state environmental laws, such as the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Clean Water Act, and Clean Air Act.
  • Experience working with frontline communities and coalitions to advance environmental justice.
  • Commitment to Earthjustice’s mission and values, including racial and social equity.

Skills

  • Exceptional legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Ability to manage complex litigation, including case strategy, discovery, and trial preparation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working in collaborative, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Fluency in Spanish or Vietnamese is a plus, given the communities served in the Gulf South.
