Early Childhood Instructional Assistant Short Term Hourly (Temporary)

About the Role

This position provides short-term hourly support to Childhood Instructional Specialists with instructional activities designed to stimulate learning and assists in the care and supervision of children at the Child Development Center (CDC).

Responsibilities

• Supervise and/or facilitate play activities of children as requested by Early Childhood Education Specialist.
• Participate with children in group activities.
• Enforce safety rules and procedures.
• Perform general set up and clean up duties, including maintaining sanitation of toys, materials, and surroundings.
• Ensure the safety and general hygiene of children at the center; assist with toilet training, diaper changes, and monitor playground activities.
• Set up, prepare, and clean up after snack; assist children with lunch.
• Intervene when children are likely to hurt themselves or others.
• Prepare supplies and the environment for activities.
• Supervise children while napping.
• Observe, record, and report individual child’s behavior as assigned.
• Assist individual children who experience difficulty in the group and require one-on-one interaction.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED certificate.
• Completion of twelve (12) units of college-level child development education.
• Six months of experience in a child care center.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Possession of or ability to obtain an Associate Teacher Permit or higher within 3 months.
• Completion of Child Abuse Training (general and child care).
• TB clearance and required immunizations to work in a child care program.

Skills

• Knowledge of basic principles of early childhood development.
• Understanding of basic nutrition standards.
• Familiarity with methods of supervising children in a child care setting.
• Ability to assist in supervision of children of various ages.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.

Physical Demands

• Lifting and moving children and moderately heavy objects.
• Kneeling, crouching, and moving around the classroom.
• Physical exertion in play activities.

Working Conditions

• Works primarily in outdoor/indoor Child Development Center environment.
• Intermittent exposure to hazardous materials such as bloodborne pathogens and bacteria.
• Constant personal contact with interruptions by students and children.
• Majority of assignments carried out during daylight hours.
