Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of insurance defense litigation from case inception to verdict, including initial case assessment, discovery, depositions, motion practice, pre-trial negotiations, courtroom advocacy, and post-trial motions to ensure favorable outcomes for clients.
- Gather and organize documents, evidence, and legal research for cases, including preparation for hearings, trials, arbitrations, mediations, and depositions.
- Conduct legal research on relevant laws, regulations, and case precedents; prepare summaries and reports.
- Prepare and draft pleadings, motions, discovery responses, and other legal documents.
- Interview clients and witnesses, as well as drafting summaries of their statements and maintaining communication records.
- Attend court hearings, depositions, and other legal proceedings to observe and assist as needed; may represent the company or clients in routine matters.
- Monitor changes in laws and regulations, and assist in updating the legal team on potential impacts to ongoing cases.
- Participate in training sessions and mentorship programs to develop legal skills and gain exposure to more complex legal work.
- Provide legal opinions to claims clients.
- Conducts depositions and examinations under oath and prepares summary documents.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate and active membership in good standing with the Virginia State Bar.
- Successful completion of courses focused on legal research, writing, and analysis, demonstrating the ability to conduct thorough legal research and draft clear, well-structured legal documents.
- Demonstrates strong time management skills, effectively balancing multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Capable of organizing case files, managing legal documents, and understanding the discovery process.
- Skilled in communicating with clients, preparing summaries, and maintaining records of interactions.
- Well-versed in legal ethics and the standards of professional conduct.
- Equipped with fundamental negotiation techniques and strategies for client interactions and settlement discussions.
- Must be proficient with computers, including Microsoft Office, LexisNexis, TeamConnect, internet research tools, and other legal case management software.
