E8089-Operator Emergency CDL Wage

Responsibilities

• Assist and support emergency operations for clearing snow and ice from roadways, applying abrasives and chemicals on road surfaces.
• Perform heavy manual labor such as installing tire chains, operating plows and blades, and debris removal.
• Carry out duties, tasks, activities and/or projects as assigned.
• Perform preventative maintenance on equipment used to clear roadways during inclement weather events.

Requirements

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lb.
• Ability to work day or night shifts to support emergency operations.
• Possession of a CDL and DOT medical card, with ongoing compliance to DOT and VDOT policies and standards.
• Safety shoes required.
• Valid driver’s license.

Skills

• Operate medium and heavy equipment such as dump trucks, front‑end loaders, motor graders, backhoes, skid steers, and tractors.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Additional Considerations

• A combination of training, experience, or education in emergency operations, snow removal, or a related field is desired.
• Ability to perform preventative maintenance on diverse equipment.
• Ability to conduct snow‑removal operations using single/tandem‑axle dump trucks, motor graders, backhoes, tractors, front‑end loaders, etc.
• Willingness to work 12‑hour shifts, night and/or day, when necessary.
• Availability to work outside normal business hours during emergencies, inclement weather, and hazardous traffic conditions.

Physical Requirements

Employees must be capable of the physical demands described in the requirements, including frequent lifting, standing, and bending, and must adhere to VDOT’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct.

Pay

VDOT utilizes a market‑based pay program approved by DHRM; advertised rates of pay may or may not align with Commonwealth pay bands.

Schedule

The position may require 12‑hour shifts, day or night, and work outside normal business hours for emergencies, inclement weather, and hazardous traffic conditions.
