DWDM Optical Network Engineer

About the role

We’re looking for a DWDM Optical Network Engineer to be a key part of a highly visible and business-critical technology team at Viasat. This is a site-based role; employees work 3+ days (60%+) per week from a Viasat office or work location within a standard five-day workweek.

Responsibilities

• Design and architecture of the company’s core network infrastructure to support our expanding global satellite fleet.
• Layer 1 through layer 3 network design, capacity planning, and platform management.
• Design of routes for fiber-based networks including point-to-point, ring, and path-diverse routing.
• Create written network implementation design plans (e.g., Method-of-Procedures MOPs).
• Hands-on experience with test equipment (BER Test, Optical Power Meter, OTDR, etc.) and troubleshooting system issues.
• Automate network components and network management systems.
• Build long-haul networks using coherent technology.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering.
• 5 years of relevant work experience with multi-vendor network equipment to architect complex DWDM systems.
• Experience with fiber network design, planning, and mapping software tools such as Nokia, Adtran, Infinera, Adva, 3-GIS, ESRI ArcGIS, and QGIS.
• Coding and debugging in Java, Python, Golang, or other modern programming languages.
• Experience with continuous integration & delivery and DevOps methodologies.
• Operational experience working with major carriers.
• Understanding of outside plant construction requirements; fiber experience preferred.
• IP and Ethernet networking experience.

Pay

Salary range $120,500.00 - $190,000.00 annually. For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area, and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $149,500.00 - $224,500.00 annually.

Base pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
