DSPandS Mobility Driver (Part-Time)

About the Role

Provides on-campus transportation to students with mobility-related disabilities under general supervision.

Responsibilities

• Drives a mobility cart over determined routes based on a daily schedule to ensure full access to the college campus for students with mobility impairments.
• Assists with, prints, and follows daily transportation schedules; arranges student pickup/delivery to align with class schedules; ensures timely pickup and delivery for access to classes, meetings, and college resources; prepares transportation reports.
• Loads and unloads students on/off the mobility cart; assists students in wheelchairs to access the vehicle; uses seatbelts and other safety equipment; secures wheelchairs; adheres to California Education Code and Motor Vehicle Code.
• Delivers examinations and other materials to the department and testing center as directed.
• Inspects vehicle for safe operation; cleans and performs basic maintenance on the mobility cart.
• Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of historically minoritized groups; participates in professional development to increase cultural competency and enhance equity-minded practices.
• May assist in training new drivers.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
• At least one year of experience in driving, working with the public, and working with individuals with disabilities; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Valid California driver’s license and ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance program.

Knowledge

• All District and campus buildings, facilities, classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, student services, and the safest, most efficient driving routes.
• Operation and basic maintenance of a modified multi-passenger golf cart.
• Proper care and handling of students with mobility disabilities.
• Safe driving methods and safety standards related to assigned duties.
• Applicable sections of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code.

Skills and Abilities

• Inspect and safely operate the District’s mobility cart.
• Assist, load, secure, transport, and offload disabled students safely and effectively.
• Accurately follow transportation schedules and routes.
• Understand and apply District and college policies and procedures.
• Engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing equity issues and improving culturally responsive practices.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Operate a computer and use standard business software.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Physical and Mental Demands

• Frequently use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, and controls; reach with hands and arms.
• Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, sit, talk, and hear.
• Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift over 100 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities include close and distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Regularly use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information, and documents; analyze and solve basic problems; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or skills; work under deadlines with interruptions; interact with students, staff, and the public.

Working Environment

• Works near moving mechanical parts and equipment in outdoor weather conditions; works in traffic; may be exposed to extreme heat and moderately cold weather.
• Moderately noisy environment.
• May require travel to other locations and adjustments to work schedules, including overtime.
