About the role
A Direct Support Professional (DSP) II works primarily in medical and behavioral settings to implement and maintain treatment plans for individuals with developmental disabilities, focusing on person-centered approaches. This role supports the Assistant Manager and Residence Manager by providing supervision, health, and safety for residents while demonstrating core competencies.
Responsibilities
- Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), including personal hygiene, food preparation, housekeeping, laundry, shopping, and mobility support for individuals with physical limitations or medical conditions.
- Execute behavioral support and monitoring plans, manage complex medical needs (e.g., wound care, feeding, respiratory care, colostomy, g-tube, frequent medical visits, barrier-free environments, wheelchair assistance, dementia/Alzheimer’s care, daily transfers, and aging individuals 65+), and foster independence and community inclusion.
- Maintain accurate and timely service records of daily activities, medication administration, behavior data, and incidents to ensure compliance with regulations and facilitate team communication.
- Ensure facility compliance with OPWDD, Justice Center, and COA standards.
- Promote community inclusion and integration by facilitating participation in social events, advisory boards, recreational opportunities, and natural supports while adhering to CQL standards.
- Utilize authorized plans to de-escalate challenging behaviors, respond to crises, and ensure the safety and well-being of individuals and others.
- Participate in Life Plan Meetings and review Habilitation plans to ensure value-based outcomes.
- Create a positive atmosphere conducive to behavior support, observe and report regressive behavior, and collaborate with clinical staff.
- Manage complex aspects of dual diagnosis, attend relevant workshops, training, and meetings.
- Transport individuals to institutions, hospitals, recreational activities, and home visits, and facilitate the day-to-day implementation of their needs.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. (CNA preferred).
- NADSP Certification must be obtained within the probationary period of employment and maintained annually.
- AMAP, SCIP, CPR, and First Aid Certifications preferred.
- Valid NY, PA, CT, or NJ Driver’s License with 6 or fewer points.
- Effective verbal, written, and technological communication skills for interacting with individuals supported, families, advocates, and professionals.
- Ability to assess situations, identify problems, and develop appropriate solutions.
- Comprehensive understanding of the needs, challenges, and best practices in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Experience working with adults with developmental disabilities.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements and standards governing residential programs for individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Strong organizational skills, including time management, prioritization, and record-keeping.
- Professionalism in handling confidentiality (HIPAA) and interacting with families, advocates, visitors, government agencies, and the public.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team, collaborating to deliver continuity of care and dignity to those served.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety.
Pay
$21.00/hour, with an education additive of $1.05 for an Associate degree or $2.10 for a Bachelor’s degree or higher.
