About the role
This position ensures trailers are positioned at dock doors in a timely manner, maintains accurate trailer locations, performs equipment inspections, and supports the overall flow of inbound and outbound freight while adhering to all safety policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Safely operate a yard truck (switcher/spotter truck) to move trailers between parking locations and dock doors.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of switch truck and trailers; report equipment defects promptly.
- Verify trailer numbers and locations to ensure accurate placement and movement.
- Coordinate with Shipping, Receiving, Transportation, and Warehouse teams to prioritize trailer movements.
- Maintain an organized trailer yard and ensure trailers are parked in designated locations.
- Inspect trailers for visible damage or safety concerns before movement.
- Secure and disconnect trailers, including landing gear, air lines, and electrical connections, following established procedures.
- Monitor dock door availability and move trailers efficiently to support operational needs.
- Maintain accurate records of trailer movements using warehouse management or yard management systems.
- Follow all DOT (as applicable), OSHA, company safety policies, and yard traffic rules.
- Respond to changing business priorities and support operational needs throughout the shift.
- Assist with general warehouse or yard housekeeping as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an acceptable driving record is required.
- Current DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate (or ability to obtain and maintain).
- Ability to meet company driver qualification standards.
- Previous experience operating a switch truck, tractor-trailer, or similar commercial vehicle preferred.
- Basic computer skills.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, and flexible schedules as business needs require.
