About the role

The Driver provides transportation services to patients with emotional or psychiatric disorders, supports the therapeutic milieu, and ensures patient safety and well-being. The role involves safe driving, vehicle checks, and maintaining professional standards in accordance with Joint Commission, Federal and State regulations, and Oceans' policies.

Responsibilities

  • Apply supportive behavior when assisting in the control of patients exhibiting unacceptable behavior.
  • Oversee patient activities and ensure patients are never left unattended to maintain safety.
  • Implement patient care activities under the direction and supervision of licensed nursing personnel.
  • Adhere to facility safety regulations, standard precautions, and infection control policies.
  • Perform safety observations, fall protocols, and one-to-one protocols as directed; assist at-risk or physically challenged patients with mobility needs.
  • Communicate and document patient observations and data effectively.
  • Coordinate with the Transportation Coordinator to establish and maintain a timely patient pickup and drop-off schedule.
  • Communicate appropriately with referral sources, patient families, and nursing/admission staff during transport.
  • Report absentees or patients unable to be picked up to nursing staff promptly.
  • Provide follow-up on patient care responsibilities, incomplete assignments, and ongoing activities.
  • Participate in performance improvement, data collection, and the hospital’s quality assessment initiatives.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • At least 6 months of experience working with psychiatric patients in an inpatient setting preferred.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of age, disability, and cultural specifics to effectively communicate with specialized populations.
  • Good physical and mental health, demonstrated by a warm, empathetic attitude and respect for patient dignity and potential.
  • Ability to work under close supervision.
  • Must successfully complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program.

Work Environment

  • Subject to frequent interruptions and occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
  • High-paced and potentially stressful environment; must cope mentally and physically with the atmosphere.
  • May experience disagreeable odors, sights, and unpredictable patient behavior.
  • Requires significant travel and exposure to outdoor conditions up to 50% of the time.
