Driver Lead

About the role

This role assists management with the oversight of drivers and routes to ensure proper coverage. It supports local management and corporate departments to ensure compliance with DOT FMCSA regulations and RJ Schinner expectations. Driving may be required 50% or more depending on location needs.

Responsibilities

• Maintain Class A CDL license, driver qualification documentation, and acceptable driving record to drive for the company on an as-needed basis.
• Act as liaison between drivers and transportation coordinator on an as-needed basis.
• Assist with approval and coordination of vacations and route coverage.
• Participate in driver interviews and assist management with hiring drivers and back-up drivers.
• Partner with management and transportation to ensure route coverage, including temporary drivers, carriers, or directly covering vacancies.
• Administer planned and unplanned maintenance of all driving equipment for the designated branch.
• Perform monthly pre-trip inspection audits to ensure all equipment meets FMCSA and RJ Schinner standards.
• Partner with Safety to coordinate driver onboarding and Driver Qualification documents as needed.
• Conduct driver training and road tests for new employees or designated remedial training programs.
• Assist management and/or HR-Safety with coaching or corrective action.
• Maintain working knowledge of systems such as GEOTAB, Samsara, Descartes, JJ Keller Encompass, and hardware components to diagnose and resolve driver questions and issues.
• Support management with the correction of driver Hours of Service (HOS) issues in GEOTAB.
• Assist with the collection and completion of accident and injury paperwork and processes.
• Perform driver ride-alongs as directed by management.

Requirements

• Valid Class A CDL Operator’s License.
• At least 3 years of driving experience.
• Ability to meet DOT requirements, including pre-employment and random drug testing.
• Clean driving record and ability to pass a background check.
• Current valid Federal Medical Card.
• Understanding of common road hazards and commitment to best safety practices.
• Previous experience making deliveries.

• Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds while moving inventory, packages, boxes, pallets, and additional warehouse equipment.
• Vision abilities required, including close vision, sound perception, focus adjustment, and manual dexterity for equipment usage.
