Driver-Equipment Operator

About the Role

Class Summary Drivers/Equipment Operators perform maintenance and operational activities in an assigned area of responsibility. Duties include driving heavy equipment, preparing routine reports, providing customer service, performing skilled repairs, troubleshooting systems, and identifying potential operational concerns.

Responsibilities

• Inspects, maintains, and performs skilled repairs on vehicles and equipment; identifies and troubleshoots applicable systems to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
• Operates light, medium, and heavy equipment, including heavy-duty excavators, jet trucks, street sweeper vehicles, and sludge press machines; inspects equipment for operational functionality.
• Provides customer service by assisting the public, vendors, and internal/external departments or agencies to facilitate events or operations.
• Prepares, maintains, updates, and forwards records, reports, logs, bills, checklists, service orders, and other documentation; maintains databases and online systems for accurate and timely documentation.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Functional Specific Responsibilities (Solid Waste Positions)

• Collects and transports solid waste and recyclables by driving assigned routes.
• Maintains and inspects vehicles and equipment.
• Trains contract laborers.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED and 2 years of experience operating heavy machinery; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• Valid Texas driver’s license.

Knowledge

• Applicable tools and equipment related to the assigned area of operation.
• Principles, policies, and procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility.
• Water collection and distribution system maintenance techniques and methods.
• Maintenance principles related to traffic signs and signals.
• Occupational hazards and safe work methods.
• Basic mathematics.
• General maintenance principles, methods, and techniques.
• Applicable Federal, State, and City laws and regulations.

Skills

• Performing skilled labor and maintenance in the assigned area of responsibility.
• Operating tools, equipment, and machinery.
• Installing, repairing, and replacing water pipes, valves, service lines, water meters, traffic signals, and fire hydrants.
• Preparing and maintaining basic records.
• Reading and comprehending manuals, specifications, drawings, and blueprints.
• Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisors, the public, and others.

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

• Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Exposure to hazardous physical conditions, including mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, gases, poor ventilation, hazardous materials (e.g., chemicals, blood, bodily fluids), extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, restricted workspaces, intense noise, and other environmental conditions.
• May require travel.
