Driver
Job Summary
The Driver works cooperatively with the Supervisor of Transportation, the Transportation Coordinator, as well as parents, principals, teachers, instructional assistants, and other drivers in all matters related to the transportation of school students and personnel. The Van Driver has the responsibility for driving his/her van as safely and efficiently as possible, and performs all duties as listed below.
Essential Functions
- Checks work email at least twice daily and communicates effectively with department.
- Plan and operate assigned routes efficiently; communicate necessary transportation information to parents/guardians and identify improvement opportunities, reporting them to the Transportation Coordinator and/or Lead Driver responsible for routing.
- Submit incident and accident reports in a timely manner to the Supervisor of Transportation and Transportation Coordinator.
- Perform required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections before and after each operation; report any mechanical concerns, damage, or safety issues immediately.
- Safely load and unload students, including providing physical assistance as required.
- Install, inspect, and properly secure child passenger safety systems, including car seats, in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, training, and applicable regulations.
- Only discharges students at authorized stops to an authorized parent, guardian, or program representative.
- Transport only assigned students and authorized personnel.
- Safely operates the vehicle in accordance with all Bucks IU rules, regulations, and safety expectations.
- Understand and comply with all policies and procedures outlined in the Transportation Handbook.
- Affords assistance, when directed, during emergency situations in accordance with training and established procedures.
- Ensure vehicle cleanliness and compliance with maintenance requirements.
- Attend and successfully complete all required trainings as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation.
- Immediately notify Human Resources and the Supervisor of Transportation of any traffic violations incurred during employment.
- Comply with the Bucks IU Drug and Alcohol policy, including participation in the random testing program.
Work Environment
Traveling to locations countywide. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands. The employee is frequently required to walk; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee may be required to stand for long periods, and to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Physically able to install/operate equipment needed for assigned route. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must have the ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee will be subject to outside environmental conditions with moderate noise level. Visual acuity with or without vision aids, ability to distinguish colors. Be free of impairment of the use of a foot, leg, hand, finger, or an arm, or other structural defects of limitations likely to interfere with the ability to safely control of vehicle. Depressing fuel and brake pedal with right foot and leg requiring 70 psi. Steps to enter and exit vehicles, step down 3.5 feet to exit emergency door.
Supervisory Responsibility
No direct supervisory responsibilities.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a part-time position. Days and hours of work vary but are Monday through Friday. This position is for an AM/PM and Midday route assignment. The driver will be paid hourly and only on operated calendar days for assigned schools.

Certificates, Licenses, Registration
- Valid PA driver's license
- Motor Vehicle Report clear of violations (per the recommended guidelines and at the discretion of the Bucks IU)
Qualification Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
- Effective communication skills.
- Ability to function independently without general supervision.
- Three (3) years of any driving experience.
- Must reside in Bucks County.
