Driver Apprentice
About the role
As a CDL Driver Apprentice, you will participate in and complete the requirements of the WillScot Driver Development Program to become a CDL Driver. Upon successful completion of the program, you will drive a truck greater than 3 tons to deliver, relocate, and return units to and from customer locations. Responsibilities include performing set-ups and knockdowns, installing essentials, and maintaining service and safety of units during transportation. You will ensure On-Time In-Full (OTIF) deliveries, installations, and returns while providing a high level of customer service. During training, you will also assist with cleaning, repairing, painting, minor repairs, monitoring inventory, and other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Comply with DOT policies and regulations, as well as WillScot Safety, Transportation, and Environmental Policies.
- Promote employee health and safety by participating in safety systems (e.g., Smith System, DuPont STOP), training, observations, and assessments.
- Attend periodic safety meetings and maintain a clean, organized work area.
- Operate company vehicles safely, maintaining a valid driver’s license and excellent driving record.
- Complete training to deliver, install/relocate, and return units, including hauling products from storage containers to wide loads.
- Maintain a clean driving record and prioritize safety.
- Train on set-ups and knockdowns of units, including blocking, leveling, anchoring, and installing tie-downs.
- Assist with loading and unloading ramps, steps, pads, and piers.
- Maintain truck logs according to DOT state and federal regulations, ensuring all paperwork and customer signatures are collected.
- Maintain constant contact with dispatchers regarding pickup/delivery instructions and vehicle issues.
- Train to perform emergency roadside repairs (e.g., changing tires, installing light bulbs, fuses, tire chains, spark plugs).
- Train to install Value Added Products and Services (VAPS) and/or Ground Level Offices (GLOs) onsite.
- Ensure On-Time In-Full (OTIF) deliveries and returns, maintaining high product quality (e.g., <60-day call & First Time Quality).
- Use Net Promoter System (NPS) feedback to address internal issues and maintain strong relationships with internal and external customers.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 21 years of age (18+ for intrastate drivers only).
- Ability to obtain a current valid Class A commercial vehicle operator’s license issued by one state or jurisdiction.
- Ability to pass a DOT Medical Exam and obtain Commercial Motor Vehicle Medical Certification.
- Good driving record:
- No more than 2 moving violations in the past 36 months in any motor vehicle.
- No citations for operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked license in the past 36 months.
- No DOT recordable accidents in the past 36 months where the driver was cited for a moving violation or charged with responsibility.
- No driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances in the past 7 years.
- No leaving the scene of an accident in the past 7 years.
- No more than one excessive speeding ticket (15+ mph over the limit) in the past 7 years.
- No reckless driving in the past 7 years.
- No moving violations in connection with a fatal accident in the past 7 years.
- No vehicular manslaughter or homicide in the past 7 years.
- No eluding a police officer in the past 7 years.
- Ability to train to safely operate company vehicles, load cargo, and complete safety training.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic computer knowledge and strong communication skills for interacting with customers, salespeople, contractors, and employees.
- Enrollment and successful completion of a certified CDL Driver training school, earning a truck driving school certificate.
- Ability to read, speak, and understand English to converse with the public, interpret traffic signs, respond to inquiries, and complete records.
Applicants with a valid Class B or C commercial driver’s license will be approved at separate program levels. Drivers with a valid Class A license but no experience will be placed in a separate program level.
