Dog Trainer

About the role

Petco is seeking a Certified Dog Trainer to enhance the bond between pet parents and their dog companions. The role involves one‑on‑one training sessions, group classes, and providing advice on basic training, environmental management, and customized training plans. Trainers also engage with guests to offer personalized solutions, recommend healthy nutrition, services, and essential supplies, contributing to the overall health and wellness of pets.

Responsibilities

• Provide world‑class dog training services, including one‑on‑one sessions and group classes.
• Attend and successfully pass Petco’s 6‑week Dog Trainer Instructor Program led by a certified mentor.
• Complete all assigned Workday Learning modules and DTIP Student Workbook materials per the DTIP roadmap.
• Recommend and sell appropriate dog training classes, training, and supplies to ensure successful outcomes for pet parents and their dogs.
• Keep accurate records of training sessions, progress, and pet‑parent feedback.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
• Work cross‑functionally with grooming and veterinary teams to provide holistic health solutions.
• Complete and apply ongoing training programs to maintain a high level of expertise.
• Provide 360‑degree solutions for all Petco guests, delivering an outstanding guest experience.
• Engage guests in the recommendation and selection of merchandise and services that meet identified needs.
• Generate future business through deep understanding of guests and their pets, leveraging digital platforms.
• Demonstrate high awareness of animal health, welfare, and proper handling.
• Support the Pet Care Center in achieving performance goals.
• Ensure merchandise is stocked, priced, and displayed to enhance the shopping experience.
• Complete cash‑register transactions and support guests with the OMNI shopping experience as needed.
• Adhere to established operational guidelines, policies, and procedures.
• Promote a positive culture of teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration.
• Complete other duties and special projects as assigned.
• Evaluate guest inquiries and refer to the Leader on Duty when appropriate.
• Utilize selling behaviors to identify and solve guest needs today and in the future.
• Contribute to a safe environment by following safety protocols for partners, guests, and pets.
• Participate in developmental programs to support ongoing career growth.

Basic Qualifications

• Passion for animal care, training, and welfare with a genuine interest in improving the lives of pets and their owners.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for clear instruction, demonstrations, and effective selling techniques.
• Ability to handle dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds safely and humanely.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize responsibilities.
• Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed.
• Physical stamina to stand, walk, bend, and lift objects up to 50 lb associated with training equipment and supplies.
• Familiarity with computer systems and software to manage training records, schedules, and communication.
• Supervisory Responsibility: None

Certification Requirements

• Stage 1 – Dog Training Apprentice: Complete the 6‑week Dog Training Instructor Program (DTIP) with instructor‑led learning.
• Stage 2 – Dog Trainer: Successfully run and grow the dog training business in a Pet Care Center, supported by local and national marketing, internal partner resources, networking, and online booking/scheduling systems.
• Stage 3 – Health & Wellness Certification: Complete the Health & Wellness Certification Program for Dogs.
• Note: Candidates with prior experience who pass skill and knowledge assessments may be eligible for accelerated training.

Pay

Salary Range: $12.00 – $19.50 per hour (or equivalent salary).
Start Rate: $14.00 per hour.
Actual pay rates will depend on position, location, experience, and applicable state or local minimum‑wage laws.
