About the Role

Join our team as a Manager, Transportation to ensure a department culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost. This role is responsible for leading drivers and Transportation associates, fostering a safety-first environment, and driving efficient transportation operations to ensure safe, accurate, and timely daily outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible to participate in a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship position in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

Responsibilities

  • Lead with a safety mindset to ensure injury-free interactions for associates, customers, and the public.
  • Champion safety procedures, processes, and training to maintain a safety-first culture.
  • Oversee and develop drivers and Transportation associates through coaching, training, and performance discussions.
  • Ensure all associates are appropriately trained in job duties, safety, and legal responsibilities.
  • Create an atmosphere of upward communication and motivate associates to achieve department goals.
  • Direct and supervise the work and productivity of drivers and clerical associates.
  • Drive associate engagement and retention while embodying US Foods values.
  • Participate in interviewing, hiring, and performance reviews of Transportation personnel.
  • Monitor production goals and maintain a zero-error attitude for accuracy and customer satisfaction.
  • Anticipate, analyze, and troubleshoot delivery problems; devise cost-effective and legal solutions.
  • Ensure team adherence to DOT regulations.
  • Identify and eliminate waste, improving processes for safety and efficiency.
  • Conduct routine Safety and Driver Meetings.
  • Oversee maintenance of driver qualification files.
  • Investigate accidents, track causes, and implement preventative actions.
  • Effectively schedule working shifts using planning tools (e.g., Microsoft Excel).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Relationships

  • Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse leaders, and internal customers across departments (e.g., Sales).
  • External: Customers.

Work Environment

  • May spend significant time on the road.
  • Must spend a portion of working time in a truck with drivers, exposed to noise and vibration levels higher than those in passenger cars.
  • Will spend time in an office working on a computer.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • Minimum of one year of experience overseeing a workforce.
  • Experience as a driver is a plus.
  • High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.
  • 10% travel required, typically for mandatory meetings and/or training.

Skills

  • Broad knowledge of transportation/delivery operations, methods, and procedures.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and people development skills.
  • Strong understanding of DOT requirements.
  • Familiarity with inventory control, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office).

Physical Qualifications

Must be able to perform the following physical activities for described lengths of time:

  • Drive vehicles (e.g., van, pallet jack).
  • Push/pull objects (e.g., hand truck, dolly, product).
  • Climb/balance (e.g., in/out of trucks).
  • Grasp objects (e.g., pens, telephone, paper, computer mouse, boxes, hand truck/dolly handles, steering wheel).
  • Manipulate objects (e.g., paper files, spreadsheets, boxes of product, hand truck/dolly gear shift).
  • Manual dexterity (e.g., typing, use of office machines such as copiers and printers).

Pay

The expected base rate for this role is between $65,000 and $105,000, depending on relevant experience, education, skills, function, geographic location, and other applicable factors.
