About the role

We conduct large-scale surveys and standardized tests like TIMSS, PIRLS, and the Flemish Tests to understand the strengths and weaknesses of students in lower secondary education. Behind these average scores lie various practices such as differences between students, teaching methods, educational streams, and so forth. Through this doctoral research, you map out alternative patterns and seek possible explanations. You perform analyses on large datasets and report this clearly.

Responsibilities

• Conduct analyses on large datasets
• Report findings in a clear manner
• Collaborate with supervisors to refine the research focus and methods

Requirements

• A Master's degree in education (or equivalent) with a focus on lower secondary education
• Excellent academic results, particularly in your master's thesis
• Motivated to develop independent research and further develop your skills in research
• In-depth knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research design, implementation, and analysis
• Experience with educational research, academic writing, and presenting are additional advantages
• Strong problem-solving ability, flexible, have organizational capacity, and resilient
• Outstanding communication skills and have a good knowledge of Dutch and English, both verbally and in writing

Pay

The salary is that of a Doctoral Scholarship holder. The appointment is for 2 years. If positively evaluated, the appointment can be extended for another 2 years.

Schedule

The selection procedure consists of an initial selection based on the application dossier and an assignment with an interview on Wednesday, August 19th (between 15:00 and 18:00). The assignment involves developing and presenting an own research proposal (10 minutes), followed by an interview based on the description of this vacancy.
