Community Volunteer Program

In the Community Volunteer Program, volunteers work one-to-one with visually impaired adults in their community, assisting with reading or shopping.

SUPPORT GROUPS

  • Individuals gather to share challenges and resources in peer-led support groups.
  • Elders with low vision can work with Vision Rehabilitation Specialists to learn strategies for living with limited or no vision.
  • Focus areas include reading and writing, magnification, lighting, diabetes management, home safety, and daily activities.

Volunteer Needs

MABVI's greatest need is for volunteers in the Boston region, willing to travel anywhere within the City of Boston. A car is needed for this volunteer role. Volunteers would like to assist once a week or bimonthly. One participant needs help in Quincy, MA.

Volunteer Role

As a MABVI Volunteer, you may help with tasks such as:

  • Reading mail
  • Paying bills
  • Internet Use/Technology
  • Medical Transportation
  • Going grocery shopping
  • Running errands in the community
  • Recreational activities such as being a running/walking sighted guide
  • Other Clerical tasks

Time Commitment

The Volunteer Onboarding Process includes:

  • Completing a MABVI Volunteer application
  • Completing the online, modular MABVI Volunteer Training
  • Scheduling a time to chat via Zoom with a member of the MABVI Volunteer Team
  • Submitting a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI)
  • Making a connection with a MABVI participant via Zoom or phone call
