Diversity Equity & Inclusion Matter: Monterey Bay Aquarium Veterinary Externship
About the role
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Veterinary Externship provides Veterinary students in their clinical years with hands-on experience working with a diverse array of marine and terrestrial animals. The program aims to increase the diversity of veterinarians involved in conservation and aquatic animal medicine.
Responsibilities
- Assist veterinary and animal care staff with clinical cases, daily rounds, diagnostic and surgical procedures
- Participate in necropsies and clinical pathology
- Observe and assist husbandry staff, applied water science technicians, and the sea otter rehabilitation team
- Prepare and present a case report, literature review, or other relevant topic at the end of the externship
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a veterinary program and in clinical year(s)
- In good academic standing
- In good physical condition (able to lift 25kg)
- Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors in central coastal, California weather conditions
Qualifications
- Underrepresented cultures, races, and/or religions preferred
Skills
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Interest in conservation and aquatic animal medicine

Schedule
Externship dates are from March 1 to November 1 of each year. Students should plan to spend two to four weeks at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Priority for choosing time slots is according to rank during the selection process.
