About the role

At CVS Health®, we are focused on transforming health care for our customers and making our company a great place to work. Within our retail locations, District Support Pharmacists (DSPs) play a critical role in cultivating a culture of excellence by acting as role models, demonstrating genuine care, and setting the bar for the pharmacy team. The DSP works within the district to cover pharmacist scheduling gaps, supports pharmacy management, and is accountable for the oversight and operation of the pharmacy and its team.

Responsibilities

  • Living our purpose by helping to manage and improve patient health through safe and appropriate dispensing, counseling, and immunizing practices.
  • Traveling the district to fill pharmacist shifts as scheduled by the District Performance Coordinator (DPC); overseeing the pharmacy and serving as the Pharmacy Manager’s proxy during bench shifts without overlap.
  • Supporting safe and accurate prescription fulfillment by following—and directing the pharmacy team to follow—pharmacy workflow procedures and utilizing safety guardrails at every workstation.
  • Assuming the Pharmacy Manager’s day‑to‑day duties when serving as the only or primary pharmacist‑on‑duty.
  • Contributing to positive patient experiences by showing empathy and genuine care, coaching the pharmacy team to demonstrate compassionate care, collaborating with the patient’s total health‑care team, and proactively resolving insurance and medication issues.
  • Proactively offering and delivering immunizations to keep patients healthy; engaging and supporting Pharmacy Technicians to learn to immunize.
  • Supporting effective pharmacy inventory management, following—and guiding the team to follow—all inventory best practices, with special focus on protecting cold‑chain products.
  • Remaining flexible for scheduling and business needs while contributing to a safe, inclusive, and engaging team dynamic.
  • Maintaining relevant clinical and technical skills as the industry evolves (including company‑required trainings and CMEs) and actively seeking opportunities to expand knowledge to better support patients.
  • Supporting access to care and improving patient outcomes through pharmacist‑delivered clinical services such as testing and prescribing (e.g., COVID/Flu, hormonal contraception) where permissible, empowering the team to provide holistic care.
  • Understanding and complying with all relevant federal and state laws, regulations, professional standards, and ethical principles; adhering to CVS Health policies, controlled‑substance dispensing and recordkeeping requirements, and maintaining a safe, inclusive workplace.

Required qualifications

  • Active Pharmacist License in the state where the store is located.

  • Regular and predictable attendance, including weekends.
  • Ability to complete required training within designated timeframes.
  • Attention and focus: concentration on tasks, quick pivoting to meet patient and business needs, and accurate prescription verification.
  • Customer service and team orientation: proactive assistance, friendly demeanor, and responsive to patient reactions.
  • Communication skills: effective verbal and written interaction, active listening, and clear articulation of instructions.
  • Mathematical reasoning: ability to perform dispensing calculations (tablet counts, days’ supply, bottle quantities).
  • Problem resolution: identifying challenging interactions and selecting appropriate actions.
  • Physical demands: ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 20 lb occasionally (10 lb frequently), reach overhead, move items, and perform fine‑motor tasks such as scanning and typing.
