District Special Projects Engineer (61036000)

Job Responsibilities

• Serves as District Special Project Engineer, supervising the field construction office consisting of engineers and technicians.
• Supervises, plans, and coordinates the daily work schedules of subordinate employees engaged in the inspection and surveying of roadway and bridge construction projects.
• Supervises staff, including preparing performance planning and evaluation documents and related paperwork.
• Counsels, coaches, and trains employees.
• Establishes and monitors work processes.
• Implements management policies and initiatives and promotes teamwork within the organization.
• Captures and relocates utilities in conflict with roadway and bridge construction, ensuring proper alignment and elevation during relocation.
• Represents SCDOT at public hearings and serves as liaison with county and municipal officials.
• Responds to inquiries from the general public.
• Makes sure contractor schedules on assigned projects are monitored.
• Makes sure project budgets are controlled and project costs are monitored through close monitoring of construction activities and the application of innovative engineering techniques.
• Makes sure project quality is ensured through appropriate sampling and testing procedures.
• Prepares, reviews, and submits the necessary documentation to close out projects in a timely manner.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and five (5) years of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

Physical Requirements

• The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
• This position may require travel.
• This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling.
• This position requires driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards.
• May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
• This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
• Must be able to work outside in various weather conditions, subject to dust, excessive noise, and traffic hazards for extended periods of time.
• Required to work additional hours on occasion during inclement weather or emergency situations.
• May require overnight stay on occasion due to training conferences or to provide assistance in other parts of the state during severe inclement weather or emergency situations.
• A motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
