About the Fellowship

The Independent Practitioner Fellowship supports practitioners in their individual work with the goal of strengthening and enriching the humanities community in Washington, DC. This program provides resources to individuals who do not always have the opportunity to engage in the humanities as a career or passion. Fellows are those independently pursuing humanities-based projects that enhance the local humanities landscape.

Fellows receive a $10,000 award, disbursed monthly over 10 months, and meet monthly as a cohort for professional development and peer support. They also contribute to HumanitiesDC programs relevant to their interests and have their work promoted and celebrated at the end of the Fellowship.

Requirements

  • Individuals independently pursuing humanities-based projects aimed at strengthening the humanities community in Washington, DC.

District Fellowship

HumanitiesDC created the District Fellowship to support early-career humanists, historians, and non-profit professionals residing in the DC area. This program provides hands-on experience, professional development, and opportunities to lead individual projects or initiatives within program areas.

  • Fellows work closely with HumanitiesDC staff, receive coaching, and gain exposure to the DC humanities community.
  • Selected annually, fellows take on 9-month roles, supporting organizational work while completing an individual project by the fellowship’s conclusion.
