District Executive

About the role

Scouting America Long Island is seeking a motivated professional to serve as a District Executive, responsible for growing and strengthening Scouting within an assigned area of Long Island. The District Executive works directly with volunteers, families, schools, community organizations, and local leaders to grow membership, strengthen existing Scouting units, develop new units, and expand community support for Scouting.

Responsibilities

• Membership Growth & Retention
  • Achieve annual youth membership and retention goals.
  • Develop and implement year-round membership plans, with a strong focus on fall and spring recruitment.
  • Build relationships with schools and community organizations to create opportunities to introduce families to Scouting.
  • Work with existing units to develop effective recruitment and retention plans.
  • Identify struggling units and work with volunteers to improve unit health.
• New Unit Development
  • Identify opportunities to expand Scouting into new schools and communities.
  • Develop relationships with prospective chartered organizations and community partners.
  • Recruit adult leadership and organize sustainable new Scouting units.
  • Provide follow-up and support to newly organized units during their first year.
• Volunteer Leadership
  • Recruit, develop, and support volunteers to accomplish district and council goals.
  • Work closely with the District Chair, District Commissioner, and other key district volunteers.
  • Help build strong district committees and volunteer teams.
  • Develop volunteers to lead programs and initiatives rather than relying on professional staff to perform every function.
• Fund Development
  • Support Scouting America Long Island’s annual fundraising efforts.
  • Develop relationships with community leaders, businesses, donors, and prospective supporters.
  • Recruit and support volunteers for fundraising initiatives.
  • Achieve assigned fundraising goals and support council development efforts.
• Unit & Program Support
  • Maintain regular communication with unit and district leadership.
  • Connect volunteers with council resources, training, camping, advancement, and program opportunities.
  • Support volunteer-led district activities and council-wide programs.
  • Promote participation in Scouting America Long Island camping, training, and special events.
  • Ensure activities and operations follow Scouting America policies and council procedures.
• Community Relations
  • Represent Scouting America Long Island throughout the community.
  • Develop relationships with schools, businesses, civic organizations, religious organizations, municipalities, and other community partners.
  • Promote Scouting’s programs and opportunities to families and community leaders.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, consistent with Scouting America professional requirements.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to recruit, motivate, and work effectively with volunteers.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.
• Comfortable speaking with community leaders, families, volunteers, and groups.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes some evenings and weekends.
• Scouting experience is helpful but not required.

Pay

Starting salary: $66,500 annually.
