About the role

Under the direction of the Principal, this position assists a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction and care for students who exhibit developmental, behavioral, or emotional difficulties. Responsibilities include hygiene-related tasks, instructional reinforcement, and routine clerical support.

Responsibilities

• Assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction related to the care and recreational activities of students who exhibit developmental, behavioral, or emotional difficulties.
• Assist students with instructional and physical education activities in an individual or group setting.
• Assist students in recognizing essential survival words (e.g., phone numbers, names, home addresses) and provide self-help training (e.g., removing and hanging jackets, zipping and buttoning clothing, grooming, brushing teeth, toilet training, changing diapers).
• Assist students with learning to prepare simple food dishes, self-feeding, developing good eating habits, and maintaining a clean kitchen.
• Distribute and assist students with medications according to prescribed procedures.
• Assist students with seizures and other medical issues as assigned; perform first aid and CPR as needed; lift and carry students as necessary; push students in wheelchairs.
• Assist in managing severe acting-out student behavior through positive reinforcement strategies.
• Prepare instructional materials and provide routine clerical support.

Requirements

• One (1) year demonstrated experience working with youth in an organized setting.
• High School graduate or the equivalent.
• Completion of two (2) years of higher education study OR possession of an Associate’s or higher level degree OR pass assessment demonstrating knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics OR reading, writing, and mathematics readiness, including minimally 6 ECE college-level units in Early Childhood Education within the first year of hire.
• Successful completion of the State-mandated proficiency examination.
• Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance.
• Tuberculosis clearance.
• Current First Aid and CPR Certificates.

Pay

Classified Salary Schedule: $20.97 – $40.03 hourly (Step 28–35, A–J).

Schedule

Full-time, 180-day work year, 6 hours per day. Position located at Saul Martinez Elementary School.
