Distribution Process Worker
Responsibilities
- Stock selection, stow, location survey, physical inventory, material handling, material examining and identifying, packing, and operating Material Handling Equipment (MHE).
- Receives, unloads, and processes incoming shipments; checks accompanying documentation against container or packing labels.
- Reports over, short, misdirected, or damaged materials following established procedures.
- Packs and/or repacks a variety of items utilizing standard packing materials, methods, and techniques; determines appropriate packing method based on commodity/item type.
- Assembles items for shipment according to shipping requests; checks condition of shipping containers prior to loading and ensures proper loading onto conveyances.
- Counts types and quantities of items during inventories; maintains tally listings and assists in determining causes for discrepancies.
- Operates material handling equipment such as forklifts (up to 15,000 pounds capacity), warehouse tractors, or general-purpose vehicles.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Non-Critical Sensitive position with Secret Access; appointment subject to favorable suitability or fitness determination.
- Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): Non-Exempt.
- Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.

- Pre-Employment Physical: Required.
- Must possess or obtain a REAL ID or acceptable identification for federal facility access.
- Position may fill various shifts within DLA Distribution Puget Sound, WA.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license.
- Must obtain and maintain licenses/certifications required by installation, federal, state, and local laws.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license to operate government vehicles.
Qualifications
Applicants will be rated based on the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. While no specific length of experience is required, you must meet the screen-out element and demonstrate through experience and training that you possess the necessary knowledge and skill to perform the job. Emphasis is on the quality of experience, not duration.
The screen-out element and minimum qualifications for this position include the ability to perform common tasks under close supervision, such as identifying condition codes, classification, and reparability of items.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student, or social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and may count toward qualifying experience.
Physical Effort
- Stands on hard surfaces for extended periods.
- Frequent bending, stooping, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions.
- Lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds; uses weight handling equipment or assistance for heavier items.
Working Conditions
- Works in outdoor and indoor environments that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted.
- Subject to cuts, scrapes, bruises, muscle strain, noise, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock.
- Wears protective clothing such as steel-toed shoes, respirators, safety glasses, and earplugs.
- Exposure to mechanized roller conveyors as part of material routing and distribution.
