Distribution Engineer / Designer * 100% remote * Job Description This role focuses on power distribution design for a major utility client, with a strong emphasis on using DDS to develop and support distribution designs. You will work entirely remotely and will not perform any field work. The position centers on creating high-quality distribution design packages and, over time, may expand to include Quality Control and audit responsibilities for designs prepared by other team members. You will also use Crews, a utility-specific system similar to SAP, to manage and complete work orders. This opportunity sits within a growing utility energy division, offering clear paths for professional development and leadership responsibilities. Responsibilities Perform detailed power distribution design work using DDS to support utility distribution projects.Develop and update distribution design packages that meet the standards and requirements of the utility client.Use Crews (a utility-specific version of SAP) to process, track, and complete work orders related to distribution design.Apply engineering principles to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient power delivery in all distribution designs.Review your own design work to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards and client specifications.Work toward taking on quality control responsibilities, including performing detailed QC checks on distribution designs prepared by other designers after gaining experience in the role.Conduct design audits and quality reviews to identify errors, inconsistencies, or improvement opportunities before submittal to the utility client.Collaborate with internal engineering, construction, and utility-focused teams to coordinate design solutions and resolve technical issues.Support the utility energy division’s distribution and reliability initiatives by delivering timely and accurate design outputs.Maintain organized documentation of design work, QC reviews, and audit findings within DDS, Crews, and other project systems.Participate in ongoing training and development activities to strengthen technical skills and deepen knowledge of utility distribution standards.Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by sharing best practices, lessons learned, and process enhancement ideas with the team.Prepare for potential future leadership responsibilities, including acting as a primary point of contact for assigned utility clients and leading design efforts on awarded work. Essential Skills At least 3 years of experience using DDS specifically to support FirstEnergy distribution design projects.Proven experience in power distribution and distribution design engineering for utility clients.Hands-on experience delivering distribution designs that support power delivery and reliability objectives.Familiarity with FirstEnergy standards, processes, and expectations for distribution design work.Experience using Crews or similar utility-focused systems (such as SAP-based platforms) to manage work orders.Ability to perform or quickly learn to perform quality control and audit checks on distribution design packages.Strong understanding of electrical and power distribution engineering concepts.High attention to detail and accuracy in technical design work and documentation.Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment while meeting deadlines and quality expectations.Effective communication skills to collaborate with internal teams and support coordination with utility clients. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience performing quality control or QC reviews of designs prepared by other designers, especially for submittals to FirstEnergy.Background in civil, electrical, or related engineering disciplines supporting the utility industry.Exposure to utility-related work such as construction services, site development, survey, storm water, transportation, or wastewater projects.Interest in long-term professional growth within a utility energy division that is experiencing significant expansion.Motivation to pursue professional development opportunities, including preparation for the FE exam and eventual PE licensure with organizational support.Ability to adapt to working with multiple utility clients and projects across different regions as the division continues to expand.Strong organizational skills to manage multiple work orders, design tasks, and QC activities simultaneously. Work Environment This position is 100% remote, allowing you to perform all work from a home or remote office environment with no field work required. You will primarily use DDS for power distribution design and Crews, a utility-specific system similar to SAP, to manage and complete work orders. You will be part of a growing utility energy division within a larger consulting engineering organization that maintains multiple offices across the Midwest and supports a range of utility and infrastructure projects, including distribution, reliability, construction services, site development, survey, storm water, transportation, and wastewater. The division is expanding rapidly, creating opportunities to grow into key roles and lead client-focused work as you demonstrate strong performance. During the initial period, you will receive one week of vacation and six holidays; upon transitioning to direct employment, you will receive two weeks of vacation, six sick days, and nine holidays. The culture emphasizes professional growth, including support for engineering staff preparing for the FE exam and working toward PE licensure, as well as exposure to multiple major utility clients and out-of-state utility projects. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Taylor, MI. Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
