About the role
The Distinguished Engineer role at Capital One is designed for individuals who are leading experts in their domains, responsible for architecting and delivering complex software systems. Responsibilities
- Architect and develop software and systems powering loyalty rewards and benefits capabilities
- Ensure the quality and engineering excellence across systems processing hundreds of thousands of orders daily
- Lead by example through direct code contributions and mentoring
- Leverage modern AI coding tools such as Windsurf and Claude Code to enhance software delivery
- Collaborate with business partners to scope, define, and build customer-facing features
- Articulate and evangelize a bold technical vision for your domain
- Decompose complex problems into practical and operational solutions
- Ensure the quality of technical design and implementation
- Act as an authoritative expert on non-functional system characteristics
- Continuously learn and share advanced technical knowledge
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, maximizing impact
- Mentor and coach the technical expertise of the engineering and product community
- Influence senior stakeholders to allocate resources to critical initiatives
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree
- At least 7 years of experience in Software Engineering, including system design and regular code contributions
- At least 1 year of experience using generative AI coding tools
- At least 7 years of experience in Back End technologies (Go, Java, Python, Database Design)
- At least 7 years of experience in Web technologies (JavaScript, TypeScript, SPA frameworks)
- At least 7 years of experience creating and enforcing standards for platform standardization and simplification
- At least 7 years of experience with modern cloud computing platforms (AWS)
- At least 7 years of experience in designing scalable microservice architectures
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field
- At least 2 years of experience using generative AI coding tools
- At least 8+ years of professional experience coding in commonly used languages
- At least 8+ years of professional experience in the full lifecycle of system development
- At least 3+ years of experience with public or private cloud technologies
- At least 8+ years of experience with Networking (BGP, Wi-Fi, SD-WAN, Cloud Networking and Data Center Networking)
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field
- At least 10+ years of professional experience coding in commonly used languages
- At least 10+ years of professional experience in the full lifecycle of system development
- At least 10+ years of professional experience with public or private cloud technologies
- At least 10+ years of professional experience with Networking (BGP, Wi-Fi, SD-WAN, Cloud Networking and Data Center Networking)

Pay
The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
- Chicago, IL: $244,700 - $279,200 for Distinguished Engineer
