About the role

The AI Foundations team at Capital One is central to bringing our vision for AI to life. We work with data scientists, software engineers, machine learning engineers, and product managers to develop AI-powered products that enhance customer interactions. Our work spans from designing and implementing AI models to deploying them at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with a cross-functional team to deliver AI-powered platforms and solutions that transform how customers interact with their money.
  • Build AI foundation models throughout the entire development lifecycle, from design to training, evaluation, validation, and deployment.
  • Engage in high-impact applied research to advance AI capabilities and integrate them into customer experiences.
  • Leverage a diverse stack of technologies, including Pytorch, AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, Lightning, and VectorDBs, to extract insights from vast amounts of data.
  • Use your interpersonal skills to translate complex AI concepts into actionable business goals.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or related fields with 4 years of experience in Applied Research.
  • M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or related fields with 6 years of experience in Applied Research.
  • Experience with large-scale model training, including training optimization, self-supervised learning, robustness, explainability, and RLHF.
  • Track record of delivering models at scale, including training data and inference volumes.
  • Experience with common training optimization frameworks like Deep Speed, Nemo, and expertise in one or more of the following areas: language models, image models, event models, graph models.
  • Multiple publications at major conferences like ACL, NAACL, EMNLP, Neurips, ICML, or ICLR on topics related to large language model pre-training, SSL techniques, and model pre-training optimization.
  • Experience working on large language models (open source or commercial) that are currently available for use.
  • Ability to lead a large-scale model training team and guide the technical direction of the team.

Pay

Salaries for this role vary by location, ranging from $306,300 - $349,500 for Distinguished Applied Researcher in Cambridge, MA to $381,300 for Distinguished Applied Researcher in San Francisco, CA. Performance-based incentives may also be offered.

Schedule

This role is full-time and requires regular attendance and availability to meet the demands of the job.

Skills

Strong technical skills in machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing (NLP) are essential. Experience with open-source tools and cloud computing platforms is preferred.
