Dispatcher - Seasonal - Part Time
About the role
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for multiple seasonal, part-time Dispatchers. The MDT Transportation Management Center (TMC) dispatcher provides communication services to MDT staff, Federal agencies, National Weather Service, Disaster and Emergency Services, and law enforcement.
Responsibilities
- Road reporting
- Incident dispatching
- Emergency communication
- Variable message sign (VMS) operation
- Roadway Management System (RMS) operations and system maintenance
- Communicating with highly emotionally charged individuals
- Maintaining calm under high-stress, emotional emergency conditions
Requirements
Required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a high school diploma or equivalency. No previous work experience is required.
Qualifications
- Ability to operate a computer terminal and peripheral equipment: multi-line phone system, and two-way radios
- Disseminate information accurately and precisely in person, by radio, by phone, and via RRS
- Document information accurately as reported by phone, radio, in person, and by other technology

Schedule
The TMC operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round. Employees should expect to work varying shifts throughout the year including weekends and holidays. The season typically ends in early April, depending on weather. New employees will start on Monday, October 26, 2026 and will complete one week of training during normal business hours. Employees will begin working their assigned shifts beginning Saturday, October 31, 2026. These positions are located in Helena, MT and are not telework eligible.
