Role
Under general direction of a Transportation Manager and with minimal supervision, coordinates the assigning of substitute drivers and attendants to ensure that all routes are covered. Processes driver/attendant leave request and absences from work. Maintains and reviews dispatch reports, timesheets and related correspondence.
Essential Functions
Reporting directly to the Transportation Manager, the Dispatcher performs the following duties:
- Analyzes available resources against immediate requirements for drivers and/or buses within the fleet to meet ongoing demand for providing transportation services to students and schools within FCPS. Assigns staff and makes adjustments to bus routes to ensure on-time bus transportation is provided.
- Directs the pool of utility drivers and substitute drivers, assesses current shortages against available resources, assigns daily work assignments to individuals to maintain 100% operational capability, monitors their performance and hours worked.
- Utilizes the two-way radio system to coordinate between operations and fleet to respond to emergency situations, re-routing request or any other non-routine event.
- Reviews leave submissions for compliance and reviews dispatch log to assess driver availability for requested leave. Makes annotations and forwards leave requests to appropriate manager for approval/disapproval. Maintains leave file and enters data for use by Payroll Assistant to be used in compliance with payroll register.
Other Functions
Performs other duties as assigned by the Transportation Management Staff.
Required Qualifications
- Meet all Motor Vehicle Licensing requirements for a commercial driver's license (CDL) Class B with a passenger and school bus endorsement.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of office methods and equipment.
- Working knowledge of English usage and math.
- Knowledge of installation and maintenance of filing systems.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
- Computer experience in work processing and/or data entry.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely in oral and written form.
- Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
Preferred Qualifications
- AA degree in related field.
- Experience with software/hardware training and support.
- Experience with spreadsheet applications, communication applications, and/or graphic applications.
- Ability to set up schedules.
- Familiarity with the FCPS policies, goals and programs.
