About the role

The Patient Transporter functions within the guidelines of South Shore Health’s policies and procedures. They provide prompt, courteous, customer service to patients, visitors, and co-workers, working collaboratively with other team members and ancillary departments.

Responsibilities

  • Safely transports patients between departments (radiology, PACU, medical surgical units, and emergency department) using stretchers, wheelchairs, and beds.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly patient environment.
  • Monitors the safety of the behavior management patient, checking for the Blue for Behavior bar on patient room placard.
  • Assists with patient transfers using specialized equipment like slide boards and gait belts.
  • Monitors patient comfort and condition during transport, ensuring O2 & IV lines are safe and observing for any changes.
  • Communicates clearly with nursing and clinical staff, accurately informing departments of patient departures and returns.
  • Coordinates with clinical staff to ensure proper labeling of patient belongings and maintains awareness of individual patient needs.
  • Utilizes software applications required by department and unit standards, operating SSH issued devices to receive transport orders and document completion of services.
  • Answers the phone and dispatches services when needed, prioritizing needs of the nursing department.
  • Logs calls appropriately if covering the Dispatcher position.
  • Attends mandatory in-services as required by South Shore Health, completing annual education as assigned through Healthstream or other learning management systems by CPDS in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: High school education or equivalent preferred.
  • Age Requirement: Must be 16 years or older at the time of filing an application.
  • Work Experience: Previous hospital experience preferred but not required.
  • Additional Knowledge and Abilities: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in the English language, ability to move or lift patients and equipment, ability to provide a high-level of customer service to patients and staff in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving, ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
