Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Affords assistance to the detention staff to ensure the smooth operation of the City's detention facility within the Municipal Court. Assists in obtaining, entering, and extracting detainee data from a computer database; conducts questioning of detainees; observes detainee behavior; operates the detention facility's system control panel; maintains the detention facility's computerized book-in system; monitors video equipment of all jail areas; processes records and legal documents to facilitate information access; and performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience: At least 1 year corrections/law enforcement experience. P.O.S.T certified may be accepted in lieu of experience.
  • Licenses, Equipment or Certificates Required: First Aid, CPR, and NCIC/CCIC certifications required within 6 months of employment.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Knowledge of standard clerical/administrative practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens.
  • Handle sensitive or difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Operate various types of office equipment.
  • Perform difficult or unpleasant housekeeping tasks.
  • Skill in the operation of a personal computer and related software.
  • Keyboarding skills.

Working Conditions

  • Physical Demands: May perform moderate to heavy physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds; occasionally lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds; considerable sitting to operate a control panel and enter data into a personal computer; occasional pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting requiring full range of body movement; frequent hand/eye coordination to operate control panel and other equipment as well as assisting in controlling prisoners; speech communication, hearing, and listening to maintain communication with other employees and prisoners; vision to monitor controls, video equipment, and prisoner activities.
  • Work Environment: Works indoors in a detention/jail facility; some exposure to noise and dust; regular exposure to prisoners, some combative.
  • Shift work to include rotating shifts, working weekends and holidays.

Equipment Used

  • Operates a personal computer.
  • Kitchen and laundry equipment and control panels.
