About the Role
The Disability Resource Center (DRC) within the Student Health and Wellbeing Cluster at Cal Poly Pomona supports equal access for students with documented disabilities by verifying eligibility and determining reasonable accommodations through an interactive, highly individualized process.
Responsibilities
- DRC Intake Accommodative Services:
- Determine eligibility and effective accommodations for students with disabilities in compliance with CSU policy, ADA, Section 504, and other applicable laws.
- Ensure timely review and processing of student applications.
- Review disability documentation and conduct intake interviews and assessments to identify challenges with adaptive behaviors, disability awareness, disclosure, and use of support systems.
- Determine necessary accommodations in the university environment (residence hall, classroom, transportation, etc.).
- Keep accurate and thorough records to document basis for eligibility in accordance with ethics and confidentiality laws.
- Track and monitor students identified as having more serious needs based on severity of disability, academic jeopardy, history of behavioral problems, etc.
- Ensure accommodations are efficiently and effectively provided, including consultation and coordination with students, course instructors, Department Chairs, and College Deans to identify academically feasible accommodations that do not change essential elements of course activities, curriculum, or policy.
- Participate in development and facilitation of new programs (e.g., workshops, new student orientations) to enhance DRC support services.
- Assist in developing innovative approaches utilizing available resources to meet student needs, emphasizing independence, wellness, and full participation in the learning process.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Assist in collection of assessment data and prepare reports and presentations on DRC trends.
- Assess outcomes and develop strategies for improved services, programs, and communication.
- Maintain confidential student records and track student progress in AIM and other databases.
- Conduct regular assessments of quality and effectiveness of interactions with students.
- Provide robust documentation of interactions, interventions, and programming.
- Summarize information in annual reports and provide data-informed recommendations.
- Integrated Care & Linkage:
- Assess student needs based on presenting concerns and formulate appropriate courses of action.
- Assist students with disabilities in accessing resources to improve self-advocacy, decision-making, and social interaction skills.
- Assist referred students in making use of University and community support services such as Cal Fresh, Clothes Closet, Emergency Housing, and local mental health/counseling and medical services.
- Consult regularly with departments including Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Health and Wellness Services, Dean of Students, University and Foundation Housing, and University PD.
- Identify and catalog networks of on and off-campus services, including disability testing resources.
- Work closely with DRC Counseling team to identify at-risk students and students of concern; determine appropriate referrals and resources.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution; OR
- Possession of these knowledge and abilities typically demonstrated through four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience including advising students individually and in groups, and analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.
- A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a job-related field may substitute for one year of professional experience.
- A doctorate degree and appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance, or a job-related field may substitute for two years of required professional experience for positions with major responsibility for professional, personal, or career counseling.
- Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and practices of the program area or ability to acquire such knowledge quickly.
- General knowledge of policies, practices, and activities of Student Services programs outside the immediate assignment; general knowledge of public administration principles including organizational, personnel, and fiscal management; general knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods.
- Ability to carry out complex assignments without detailed instructions; advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; determine appropriate course of action and proper techniques for sensitive personal interactions; reason logically and analyze organizational/operating problems; plan, coordinate and initiate administrative actions; analyze complex organizational, policy, or procedural problems, collect/evaluate data, draw valid conclusions, and project consequences of alternatives; understand roles and responsibilities of others; establish and maintain effective cooperative relationships even when denying requests or persuading others to accept different viewpoints.

- Proven ability to identify problems, use sound judgment and reasoning to make crucial decisions autonomously
- Demonstrated ability in managing difficult and complex situations involving students
- High degree of personal and professional integrity, strong sense of ethics, and respect for privacy and confidentiality
- Knowledge of effective strategies to ensure retention and graduation of students with disabilities
- Experience in a large, complex, diverse public higher education institution
- Well-developed skills for conferring with students, faculty, and staff about or in emergency situations
- Previous grant or project coordination experience
- Experience developing and maintaining case management files
- Broad knowledge of on and off-campus resources for educational and mental health services
- Understanding of FERPA, ADA (as amended), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other applicable laws
- Working knowledge of advanced motivational interviewing and counseling techniques
- Maintains current knowledge of and utilizes research-based best practices for provision of services for students with disabilities
Pay
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,320 per month
Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm
Work Location
This position is subject to the California State University Out-of-State Employment Policy, which prohibits hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California.
