Director, Technology FinOps
About the role
The Director of FinOps will build and lead BNY's Technology FinOps capability to drive financial accountability and maximize ROI across the technology estate. Operating in a dual-report structure to the Engineering Hub Lead and the CFO, Engineering, this role spans strategy, execution, and influence—standing up the operating model, recruiting and leading a team, and embedding cost-conscious decision-making across a complex, multi-cloud, multi-vendor environment.
Responsibilities
- AI-First Strategy and Operating Model - Define and execute the enterprise FinOps strategy centered on agentic products and autonomous workflows, aligned with engineering, finance, and business objectives. Establish a FinOps Agent Suite roadmap.
- Financial Data Products and Allocation - Partner with Finance to codify cost taxonomy, allocation rules, and metadata/tagging standards to enable showback, chargeback, forecasting, auditability, and unit economics-delivered through self-service AI assistants. Build data products that expose transparent allocation by business unit, product, application, environment, owner, and workload type.
- AI-Driven Cost Optimization - Manage commitment-based spend and optimize coverage versus utilization across providers. Deploy anomaly detection agents, variance reporting copilots, and automated remediation workflows with human-in-the-loop approvals for high-risk actions. Build forecasting models and track unit economics tied to measurable business outcomes.
- Data, Automation, and Engineering Excellence - Partner with Engineering Analytics to normalize the spend data model across provider feeds and maintain an authoritative cost graph with lineage and quality checks. Oversee the cost data pipeline from ingestion to near real-time reporting, surfacing insights via dashboards and conversational agents for Finance and Engineering. Enable automated alerting, recommendations, and enforcement.
- Governance, Risk, and Compliance - Establish and improve governance cadences: weekly operational agent reviews, monthly forecast/budget reviews, and quarterly contract/architecture reviews with AI-driven insights. Partner with procurement and legal on contract renewals, vendor rationalization, and commercial optimization. Embed responsible AI practices in all agentic workflows.
