About the Role

The Director of Tax is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing SimpliSafe's global tax strategy, operations, and compliance. This leader will direct tax planning initiatives, ensure compliance with domestic and international tax laws, and safeguard the company's tax position as the business scales. The Tax Director will collaborate with Finance, Accounting, Legal, Operations, and other cross-functional partners to support strategic decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the global tax function, including strategy, planning, compliance, reporting, audit management, and risk mitigation
  • Oversee the preparation and review of quarterly and annual income tax provisions in accordance with ASC 740
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation, review, and approval of global tax payments, corporate income tax returns, and related filings
  • Oversee sales and use tax compliance, property tax, VAT, excise taxes, and other indirect tax obligations
  • Lead tax audits and examinations for direct and indirect taxes
  • Advise on the tax implications of business activities, new products, entity structures, and strategic initiatives
  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors to supplement internal capabilities
  • Oversee tax planning and projects, including transfer pricing, mergers and acquisitions, and tax-efficient financing strategies
  • Proactively monitor evolving tax legislation and communicate potential impacts to executive leadership
  • Manage tax registrations and renewals in collaboration with internal compliance teams
  • Drive automation and process improvement by leveraging technology for compliance and strategic insights
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team across direct and indirect tax functions
  • Partner with Accounting, Treasury, Legal, FP&A, HR, and other stakeholders for operational and strategic alignment
  • Present tax updates, risks, and planning strategies to executive leadership and the Audit Committee

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline; CPA and/or Master's in Taxation strongly preferred
  • 10+ years of progressive tax experience within Big 4, corporate tax departments, or a combination of both
  • Strong technical knowledge of U.S. federal and state tax regulations; international tax experience (specifically the UK) a plus
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to develop and motivate high-performing teams
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex tax concepts for diverse stakeholders
  • Excellent analytical and strategic thinking abilities
  • A hands-on, proactive approach with the ability to operate at both strategic and detailed levels

Pay

The target annual base pay range for this role is $195,000 to $225,000. This range represents our good-faith estimate based on a market-based compensation approach, adjusted annually. Individual compensation packages are tailored considering job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and other relevant factors. Beyond base pay, the total rewards package may include participation in our annual bonus program, equity, and other forms of compensation, along with a full range of medical, retirement, and lifestyle benefits.
