Director, Software Engineering: Java

Responsibilities

• Manage a team of highly skilled software engineers in design and development of new generation highly scalable, resilient cloud‑based clearing applications.
• Mentor and collaborate with developers, architects, and product owners to deliver business and operational functionality for internal and external users.
• Solve problems creatively, communicate effectively, and proactively engage in technical decision‑making.
• Work in an agile environment with business, technical, and non‑technical professionals.
• Collaborate with others to deliver complex projects that may involve multiple systems.
• Continuously think about next steps while improving yourself and others.
• Manage a distributed development team, coordinate with vendors, and develop solutions to complex technical challenges while coding, testing, troubleshooting, debugging, and documenting systems.
• Lead efforts to optimize application performance and resilience through analysis, code refactoring, and system tuning.
• Recommend architectural changes and new technologies/tools that improve efficiency and quality of OCC’s systems and development processes.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Build and manage a team of skilled software developers.

Qualifications

• 8‑10 years of experience building large‑scale, compute‑ and event‑driven solutions.
• Experience (including internal workings) with Java 8+.
• Experience developing software using object‑oriented design, advanced patterns (e.g., AOP), and multi‑threading.
• Experience with distributed message brokers such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, Amazon Kinesis (desirable).
• Experience with cloud technologies and migrations; preferred experience with AWS foundational services (VPC, Security Groups, EC2, RDS, S3 ACLs, KMS, AWS CLI, IAM).
• Experience with testing frameworks like JUnit, Citrus (desirable).
• Experience with relational, NoSQL, object‑based, and graph databases.
• Experience following Git workflows.
• Working knowledge of DevOps tools (Terraform, Ansible, Jenkins, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD pipelines) is desirable.
• Familiarity with monitoring tools/frameworks such as Splunk, ElasticSearch, Prometheus, AppDynamics (a plus).
• “Get stuff done” mindset and flexibility for the greater good of the organization.
• Intellectually curious and eager to learn.

Technical Skills

• 8+ years of experience in team building, management, and mentoring.
• 8+ years of experience building high‑speed distributed solutions.
• Java 8+ development experience.
• 8+ years developing software using object‑oriented design, advanced patterns, and multi‑threading.
• Experience with distributed message brokers (e.g., Kafka, Amazon Kinesis).
• Working knowledge of DevOps tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Jenkins, Kubernetes, Helm (preferred).

Education

BS degree in Computer Science or a related technical field required; Master’s degree preferred.

Certificates

• OCP Java SE 8 Programmer Certification (a plus).
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate Level (a plus).

Compensation

• Salary range: $172,700.00 – $286,800.00 (exclusive of fringe benefits and potential bonuses).
• Incentive range: 23% to 30% of base salary.
• Eligibility for an annual discretionary incentive compensation award, with target range as listed above.
• All employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus based on company and individual performance.
