About the role

The Director, Safety and Security is responsible for overseeing safety and security operations for the Dr. Phillips Center to ensure the safety and security of colleagues, guests, and property assets. The Director establishes, administers, and leads safety, security, and loss prevention programs for the center, including protection of company assets, risk identification and mitigation, safety and security training, and incident investigation.

The Director manages the security and safety teams and serves as the primary liaison with city services (Police, Fire, EMT, Traffic control, etc.). They collaborate with Production, Programming, and Events on artist/event security to create a safe and welcoming experience for all colleagues, guests, and visitors.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct Security operations, including establishing, implementing, and administering security procedures and protocols.
  • Remain informed of security risks and recommend plans to mitigate potential risks.
  • Routinely inspect physical premises to ensure building and asset security.
  • Verify that all security staff are knowledgeable of procedures and can perform required job functions.
  • Cultivate a culture of safety and security through sustained, effective practices and leadership.
  • Lead safety initiatives, including facilitating monthly safety meetings and collaborating with People & Culture to identify training programs.
  • Administer scheduling and communication of programs such as Life Safety, Crowd Management, Evacuation Procedures, ADA, CPR/AED/First Aid, and OSHA-10 for General Industry.
  • Manage the "safety topic of the month" program.
  • Oversee protective equipment (e.g., video surveillance, metal detectors, alarm systems, badge access system) and train security staff on its use.
  • Identify opportunities to create efficiencies in security and safety processes through new technology, and lead the implementation of new systems.
  • Manage traffic flow and implement temporary traffic control measures to protect the public and enhance the guest experience.
  • Develop and maintain Incident Response SOPs and guides, and train colleagues and security staff on incident-related responsibilities.
  • Coordinate regular Emergency Procedure drills and maintain records of drills.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Facilities on emergency responses (e.g., mechanical alarms, fire alarms, severe weather).
  • Attend safety and security conferences to gain new knowledge and learn industry trends.
  • Schedule and supervise security staff according to business needs, including developing daily and weekly assignments and providing ongoing training.
  • Review security reports for accuracy and detail, conduct investigations, and recommend actions as needed.
  • Collaborate with Production, Programming, and Events on artist/event security, including managing vehicle parking accommodations for VIPs and show/event staff.
  • Schedule and communicate with Orlando Police Department, Orlando Fire Department/EMT, City of Orlando Traffic Division, and other government agencies.
  • Lead the safety and security audit/inspection program, ensuring audits are conducted and reports submitted.
  • Conduct risk assessments, recommend solutions to mitigate identified risks, and maintain reports of all assessments.
  • Maintain compliance with city, county, state, and OSHA regulations for safe business operations.
  • Handle complaints professionally and maintain confidentiality in all internal investigations.
  • Attend local, regional, national, and industry safety/security briefings and workshops.
  • Adhere to budgetary guidelines and support all operational policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a professional and friendly relationship with other departments, colleagues, and partners.
  • Remain calm under pressure and work effectively with internal and external customers, demonstrating high levels of patience, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Uphold Dr. Phillips Center standards of customer service at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 10 years of security experience with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or business administration required.
  • Hospitality/entertainment and community partnership experience preferred.
  • Safety experience and certifications (e.g., OSHA) a plus.
  • Experience in risk assessment and mitigation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience writing SOPs, training guides, and reports.
  • Effective presentation skills and experience training others.
  • Proficient with security-related technology and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Teams, Zoom, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to adapt to change, work effectively under pressure, and produce accurate results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong teamwork skills.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to work a variable schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet operational needs.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Must complete OSHA-30 General Industry certification within 6 months of assuming the role.
  • Must complete Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification within 6 months of assuming the role.
