About the role

As a Director of Software Development for the S3 Storage Engine organization, you will lead a group of top talent in the design and development of S3’s core storage distributed system. We build innovative software solutions to provide S3 customers secure, durable, available, and performant storage with infinite scalability and extremely low cost.

In this role, you will drive the roadmap, deliver new functionality and architectures, and raise the bar for operational excellence. You’ll lead multiple engineering teams through managers across different geographic locations, spearhead new technologies that change what is possible within S3, and own the financial health of your services. You’ll personally engage with C-suite customers to represent the Amazon S3 business.

Success requires a leader experienced in establishing and building relationships with peers, including senior AWS executives, customers, engineers, and internal organizations. You must excel at switching between complex engineering details, long-term business strategy, developing AWS leadership, and operating as a large-scale organization leader. You’ll prioritize work, set goals, and scale your team to meet the demands of a fast-growing business while maintaining a passion for operational excellence at massive scale.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of S3’s core storage distributed system.
  • Drive the roadmap and deliver new functionality and architectures.
  • Raise the bar for operational excellence in a 24x7x365 service environment.
  • Manage multiple engineering teams across different geographic locations.
  • Spearhead new technologies to advance S3’s capabilities.
  • Own the financial health of your services and engage with C-suite customers.
  • Prioritize work, establish goals, and focus on key inputs to drive business outcomes.
  • Scale yourself and your team to meet the demands of a fast-growing business.
  • Hire, develop, and retain top technical talent.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or related field) or equivalent work experience.
  • 10+ years’ experience architecting fault-tolerant and highly available systems.
  • 5+ years’ experience managing people, with 3+ years managing multiple managers/teams.
  • 5+ years’ experience owning 24x7x365 service operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A leadership position in a team delivering solutions at scale.
  • Master’s or PhD in Computer Science or Engineering with a minimum of 10 years of relevant software development and engineering management experience.

Pay

Base salary range: $264,100 - $350,000 USD annually (Seattle, WA). Your package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
