Responsibilities
- Oversee all full-time administrators and staff of the department and part-time student employees, coaches, and instructors for fitness, outdoor, aquatics, intramurals, club sports, and all recreation facilities.
- Develop and manage the Department and Fitness and Aquatic Center (FAC) budgets.
- Set operational standards for all recreational facilities and programs to ensure operational and financial effectiveness.
- Evaluate workload, priorities, and activity schedules to determine staffing requirements for events, programs, and the FAC.
- Hire, schedule, and evaluate administrator and staff performance, conducting performance appraisals and reviews on a regular schedule and as needed.
- Evaluate daily operational procedures and policies to ensure an efficient, safe, and secure environment for eligible FAC users.
- Analyze customer complaints, concerns, and suggestions; provide appropriate follow-through to ensure high-quality customer service.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for the FAC, including eligibility for memberships, services, programs, scheduling, and staff/student employee policies.
- Coordinate regular and deferred maintenance of the FAC with Facilities.
- Establish hours of operation for the Fitness and Aquatic Center and ensure trained personnel staff all operating hours.
- Participate in professional associations and development activities to remain informed about new developments in the field.
- Establish and manage operational budgets for the Department of Recreational Sports and the Fitness and Aquatic Center.
- Identify budget needs to maintain industry standards and minimize risk of injury or illness; ensure annual revenue budget expectations are met.
- Identify capital budget needs through advance planning.
- Evaluate department risk management policies and procedures to ensure compliance with University expectations and industry standards.
- Support and implement sustainability efforts to maximize energy savings at the FAC.
- Develop department goals and objectives consistent with its mission and the mission of the Division of Student Development.
- Analyze and evaluate ongoing department programs to identify areas for improvement or adjustment.
- Provide advice and consultation to administrators regarding problems; monitor status reports for assigned projects.
- Establish internal objectives and implement procedures to meet goals; assist in setting department short- and long-term goals.
- Evaluate the impact of the Department’s programs on student recruitment and retention; recommend changes based on program effectiveness.
- Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor, including required training.
Requirements
- Master’s degree.
- Minimum of 6 years of related experience, including 3 years of supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, programs, and strategies associated with administering a comprehensive program of recreational activities.
- Familiarity with current trends in campus recreation programming and meeting quality standards for services.
- Experience with recreational facility design, maintenance, successful management, and operations.
- Proficiency in budget management, capital budget planning, and equipment/supplies purchasing.
- Ability to administer performance management, make independent judgments, and possess strong critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work appropriately with other departments, executive leadership, and other University leaders.
- Ability to support the University’s goals for institutional diversity, as well as the goals and values of a Catholic, Jesuit education.
