About the role

Leads the Adventist Health (AH) enterprise-wide patient safety program. Oversees the five domains of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) patient safety structural measure, the high reliability platform (event reporting, learning and improvement), proactive patient safety initiatives, culture of safety survey and action plans, adverse event management including the cause analysis and action program and Just Culture, care for the caregiver program.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the optimization of the high reliability platform workflows (event reporting, review, analysis, and learning systems) for all modules including patient safety, workforce safety, patient experience, physician peer review, compliance, privacy, employee relations, security, property, facilities, and claims.
  • Oversees the optimization of the Lessons Learned and Improvement modules to spread and adopt improvement actions across AH.
  • Partners with medical staff leaders to engage providers in reporting, learning and improvement initiatives.
  • Supports the AH commitment to becoming a high reliability organization through the implementation of programs, training, and initiatives including but not limited to cause analysis and action program, Just and accountable Culture training, and the care for the caregiver program.
  • Fosters transparency, open communication, and psychological safety and incorporates reliability science into all programs and initiatives.
  • Collaborates with relevant leaders to conduct culture of safety survey and other appropriate surveys to assess perceptions of the AH safety culture and supports action plan development.
  • Provides oversight of the cause analysis and action program, safety event classification, and periodic common cause analysis.
  • Coordinates and manages system-wide patient safety performance improvement initiatives including but not limited to: safe technology, care processes, patient and family engagement, teamwork and communications, systematic flow of information.
  • Coordinates initiatives to meet the CMS patient safety structural measure requirements, Leapfrog patient safety, and other relevant healthcare ratings and regulatory programs.
  • Supports compliance with regulatory reporting requirements related to patient and worker safety (state reporting, CMS, OSHA, TJC, FDA).
  • Collaborates with relevant leaders to create and monitor the 'communication and resolution for adverse events' program (disclosure and financial reconciliation).
  • Oversees the measurement system for the AH patient safety program and collaborates with leadership to set goals and targets, achieve data integrity, meaningful and actionable reports, and dissemination of dashboards that drive impactful action plans.
  • Develops processes, measures, and plans to identify and address health care disparities related to patient safety.

Requirements

  • Education and Work Experience: Bachelor's Degree in nursing, pharmacy, medicine, quality engineering or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Required
  • Master's degree: Preferred
  • Seven years' related experience: Preferred
  • Five years' leadership experience: Preferred

Qualifications

  • Licenses/Certifications: Certified Professional in Patient Safety: Required
  • Just Culture Certification: Preferred
  • Lane Six Sigma Green Belt Certification: Preferred
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality: Preferred

Pay

The estimated base pay for this position is $145,954 to $218,931. Additional individual compensation may be available for this role through differentials, extra shift incentives, bonuses, etc. Base pay is only a portion of the total rewards package, and a comprehensive benefits program is available for qualifying positions.
