An established and growing engineering consulting firm is seeking a Director of Structural Engineering to provide strategic leadership across its structural practice in Georgia. As Director of Structural Engineering, you will provide strategic leadership across engineering operations, project delivery, technical standards, staff development, business planning, and client relationships. You will work closely with senior leadership to ensure the department continues to deliver high-quality engineering solutions while maintaining a collaborative and high-performing culture.

Key Responsibilities

Department Leadership & Operations

  • Lead and manage the Structural Engineering Department.
  • Drive the development and continuous improvement of technical processes, standards, and best practices.
  • Manage staffing, utilization, workload forecasting, and resource planning.
  • Review departmental performance metrics, projections, and billings.
  • Monitor operational efficiency and department performance.
  • Support strategic growth initiatives and long-term business planning.

Project Management & Technical Leadership

  • Oversee the successful delivery of all design projects within the department.
  • Provide technical leadership across a diverse portfolio of structural projects.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Lead QA/QC efforts and establish a culture of technical excellence.
  • Review engineering calculations, reports, drawings, and project deliverables.
  • Coordinate project execution from concept through construction.
  • Lead multidisciplinary design teams and collaborate with architects, contractors, and consultants.
  • Support proposal development, project scoping, and client presentations.

Team Development & Mentorship

  • Conduct employee performance reviews and career development planning.
  • Mentor engineers at all levels of experience.
  • Delegate project responsibilities while providing guidance and oversight.
  • Foster a collaborative environment centered around professional growth and accountability.
  • Support succession planning and leadership development initiatives.
  • Encourage knowledge sharing and technical excellence throughout the department.

Business Development & Client Engagement

  • Build and strengthen relationships with clients and industry partners.
  • Attend and participate in client meetings.
  • Identify opportunities for growth across Georgia and surrounding markets.
  • Support proposal preparation and project pursuits.
  • Represent the firm at industry events and within the engineering community.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering required.
  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Structural Engineer (SE) license preferred.
  • 12+ years of progressive structural engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of engineering leadership, management, or department oversight experience.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong understanding of structural engineering principles, building codes, and industry standards.
  • Experience with Revit modeling and production of construction documents.
  • Strong understanding of structural analysis and design methodologies.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and engineering software.
  • Ability to prepare and review engineering calculations, technical reports, plan sheets, details, and exhibits.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary projects from design through construction.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining quality and accuracy.

Leadership & Management Skills

  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing engineering teams.
  • Strong organizational, financial, and project management capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to balance strategic leadership responsibilities with hands-on technical oversight.

  • Strong client-facing and relationship-building abilities.
