Director of Research Finance & Administration, School of Medicine
This role provides operational, administrative, and logistical support across the School of Medicine Research Offices, directly supporting the Senior Associate Dean of Research. Research areas include the Offices of Research, Research CORES, Grants & Contracts, Clinical Research, Telehealth, Innovations, Clinical & Translational Research Development, Medical Science Training Program, Graduate Program Office, and other research-supporting units. Collectively, these units manage an annual expense budget exceeding $48 million.
Responsibilities
- Partner with unit administrators across research units to optimize processes, support cross-collaboration, and provide backup support as needed.
- Serve as liaison on behalf of the Senior Associate Dean with internal and external stakeholders.
- Oversee budget preparation, review, and comparison to actuals across the entire enterprise (over $48M), including preparation of the Institutional Funding Plan (over $1.6M) to support key research leadership and activities.
- Manage faculty appointments across the research mission, coordinating with the Office for Faculty Affairs and Human Resources to track timelines and streamline processes for both paid and non-paid appointments.
- Provide strategic direction for research finance and administration operations across departments or institutes.
- Develop and implement long-term financial and operational plans for research growth.
- Serve as the primary contact for data inquiries, ensuring alignment across data sources and consistent reporting to internal and external parties. Provide leadership with analytics and insights to track key metrics such as funding trends, indirect cost recovery, and portfolio growth.
- Act as the primary financial and administrative contact and administrator for the Clinical & Translational Research Development unit.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in business, accounting, or a related discipline.
- At least five years of administrative and supervisory experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience within UVA School of Medicine and familiarity with research administration at UVA.
Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The role occasionally requires traveling to attend meetings and programs.
This is a restricted, exempt-level, benefited position contingent on funding availability. The position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
