About the Role
Blacksmith Agency runs PPC and SEO for clients across multifamily, B2B and technical verticals. As Director of Paid Media you lead that department. The PPC strategist and the SEO strategist report to you and they are the specialists in their channels. Right now nobody owns this function, which is the whole reason this seat is open. This is a management seat, not a senior individual contributor one. You will not be building campaigns, and on technical SEO your strategist will know more than you do. That is the arrangement, not a gap. You carry channel strategy and where budget goes as accounts scale. The strategists carry the execution of it, and you carry whether the department delivers.
What You Own
- Oversee the PPC strategist and SEO strategist: set their quality bar, guide their development, conduct reviews, and decide when performance is insufficient.
- Establish the standard for work quality across the department.
- Define what a good audit looks like, specify pre‑delivery checks, and outline account reporting procedures; you create these standards and hold the specialists to them.
- Ensure client results across the function, including honest reporting (currently no one audits attribution and GA4 accuracy).
- Lead escalations for at‑risk accounts: diagnose issues, direct the strategist to fix them, and join client calls.
- Own channel strategy and budget allocation as accounts scale.
- Determine what the agency can credibly tell sales before a deal is sold.
- Develop the hiring plan for the department and conduct first‑round interviews for your team within roughly a quarter.
What You Need
- Direct experience managing strategists or specialists: you have performed their reviews, guided their development, and made performance decisions.
- 7+ years of combined paid media and SEO experience
