About the role
The Director of Nursing (Registered Nurse) will lead and manage nursing operations within a correctional healthcare setting, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care while adhering to facility policies, healthcare regulations, and industry best practices.
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily nursing operations to ensure consistent, high-quality inmate care in alignment with physician orders and facility policies.
- Serve as the primary liaison between nursing staff, providers, healthcare administration, and correctional leadership.
- Ensure compliance with MEDIKO policies, correctional standards, and federal, state, and local regulations.
- Develop, implement, and monitor nursing protocols, infection control procedures, and clinical best practices.
- Support and enforce safety, quality assurance, and risk management initiatives.
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, training, and retention efforts for nursing personnel.
- Provide supervision, coaching, and performance evaluations for nursing staff; address performance concerns in alignment with HR guidance.
- Manage nursing schedules to ensure 24/7 coverage and effective staffing levels; provide on-call support as needed.
- Maintain timesheets and approve payroll, overtime, and leave in accordance with budgetary and staffing requirements.
- Contribute to budgeting, cost containment, and operational planning for nursing services.
- Lead or participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives and meetings; submit recommendations for improving patient care.
- Oversee services provided by agency or contract nurses, ensuring quality and compliance.
- Facilitate regular staff meetings and maintain documentation of communications and updates.
- Communicate effectively with patients, their families (as permitted), and the care team regarding medical care and concerns.
Requirements
- A valid Registered Nurse license.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience in the healthcare industry, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership or director-level role is preferred.
- Proven experience in managing healthcare operations in a correctional healthcare or similar regulated environment is highly preferred.
- Experience with regulatory compliance, including familiarity with NCCHC, ACA, and other healthcare standards relevant to the correctional setting is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, project management, and leading cross-functional teams to meet business goals.
- A track record of successfully driving operational efficiencies, improving patient care, and managing budgets effectively.
- Certification in Healthcare Management (e.g., FACHE, CPHQ, CHC, or similar), Correctional Healthcare (NCCHC) or other relevant professional certifications is preferred.
- Valid state licensure or certification in a healthcare-related field (if applicable).
- Active CPR/BLS certificate required (American Heart Association/American Red Cross guideline approved), if role is located in a correctional facility.

Pay
$110,000 - $118,000 approximate salary range
Schedule
Eight-hour shifts, five days/week. Days vary and schedule will vary to cover days/evenings.
