Job Details
A leading engineering consulting Firm is seeking a Director of Mechanical Engineering & Design to provide strategic and technical leadership across complex mechanical infrastructure projects. Successful candidates will have their PE License, 5-10 years of Leadership experience Managing Design Teams, 15+ year of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Efficiency Consulting experience. This role will drive the design, planning, and execution of large-scale systems supporting commercial, institutional, healthcare, higher education, and mission-critical facilities. This position is best suited for a senior engineering professional with extensive experience in mechanical and energy systems, as well as a strong track record managing multidisciplinary teams and delivering high-impact projects within the New York market and beyond.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) License (NY)
- 15-20 years of experience in MEP engineering
- 6-10+ years of leadership experience managing engineering teams
- Demonstrated experience with healthcare, higher education, and institutional projects
- Willingness to travel as needed (approximately 20% overnight travel)
Duties
- Act as the senior authority on mechanical system and central plant design initiatives
- Lead feasibility studies, conceptual development, and detailed engineering for: Central utility plants, Steam generation & distribution systems, Chilled & condenser water systems, Heating hot water & hydronic systems, Thermal energy storage solutions, Combined Heat & Power (CHP), and microgrid applications.
- Oversee HVAC system design for large, complex facilities
- Establish and maintain engineering standards, QA/QC protocols, and design best practices
- Review and approve technical deliverables across projects
- Project Oversight: Direct multiple concurrent engagements, ranging from system analyses to large capital programs
- Manage project budgets, timelines, staffing plans, and overall quality
- Collaborate closely with clients, architects, contractors, and utility providers
- Provide engineering guidance through construction, commissioning, and system startup
- Team Leadership & Development: Lead, mentor, and develop engineers, designers, and project managers
- Conduct performance evaluations and support career development planning
- Play an active role in recruiting and retaining high-performing talent
- Client & Business Engagement: Serve as a trusted advisor to clients and key stakeholders
- Contribute to proposals, presentations, and client interviews
- Identify opportunities for repeat business and long-term partnerships
- Innovation & Strategic Initiatives: Support initiatives related to decarbonization, electrification, and sustainability
- Evaluate emerging technologies and drive innovation within engineering practices
- Contribute to long-term strategic planning and service growth
