About the Role
The Senior Litigation Counsel oversees and assesses litigation pending against the Company on a national basis. This role manages outside counsel, handles financial expenditures and analyses, ensures appropriate reserving, and communicates with Securitas insurers and management. The position primarily manages EP, GL, Bankruptcy, and Auto suits and claims, as well as attorney letters. Additional responsibilities include legal research, assisting with indemnity claim reviews, supporting other departments, reviewing training and advertising materials, drafting policies, and handling subpoenas.
This is a remote position reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, Head of Litigation, Securitas North America.
Responsibilities
- Performs case assessments and portfolio management assessments.
- Oversees and manages outside counsel handling litigation pending against the Company.
- Attends arbitrations, mediations, court hearings, and trials as necessary.
- Manages financial expenditures of litigation cases, including reserving and billing.
- Performs financial analyses to ensure optimization of case outcomes.
- Handles EP, GL, Auto, and Bankruptcy claims and lawsuits, including higher exposure matters.
- Responds to EP attorney letters received by the Company.
- Completes legal research projects as needed.
- Assists with drafting and implementing policies.
- Reviews training and advertising materials.
- Serves as the primary contact for the Risk Management Department for indemnity claims, tenders from other parties, and review of discovery, pleadings, and settlement agreements.
- Manages the subpoena function daily, including retention of outside counsel.
- Manages the summer legal intern program.
- Assists with preparation of various reports, including Monthly Function Report, Monthly High Exposure Report, Quarterly Large Lawsuit Review, Quarterly Dispute Reports, and reserve increase requests.
- Responsible for monthly GL, EP, Auto trial, arbitration, and mediation calendars.
- Interacts with insurers, brokers, and Group and Divisional Risk Management as needed.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
- Admitted to the bar in the state where the attorney resides.
- Minimum of ten years of practice, preferably initially with a prominent national law firm before moving to an in-house position.
- Preferred three years of in-house experience.
- First chair trial experience preferred.
- Experience working on matters of employment law, general liability law, and auto claims required.
- Broad legal knowledge (litigation, employment law, auto, general liability law).
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, Westlaw, etc.
- Willingness to become proficient in company risk management program and Legal Tracker billing programs.
