About the role

The Director of Knowledge Management will lead the Firm's KM program during a critical phase of transformation, focusing on practical strategies and ambitious goals to improve knowledge accessibility and usability.

Responsibilities

  • Own and execute the Firm's KM roadmap, prioritizing initiatives and setting timelines.
  • Build and scale KM teams, including attorneys, content specialists, and practice-aligned roles.
  • Translate practice needs into actionable KM projects, such as precedent collections, playbooks, and workflow improvements.
  • Define and implement the KM operating model, including governance, contribution expectations, and decision rights.
  • Develop standards for KM assets, ensuring they are authoritative, up-to-date, and accessible.
  • Partner with IT, Data Strategy, Records, Research, and practice stakeholders to ensure KM assets align with confidentiality, ethical walls, and client-specific restrictions.
  • Design lightweight processes to minimize attorney burden while maximizing capture of reusable work product and insights.
  • Work closely with Practice Innovation product owners, engineers, IT, and vendors to embed knowledge capabilities into workflows.
  • Select, design, implement, and roll out AI-enabled legal tools, ensuring they surface relevant knowledge and data in lawyer workflows.
  • Measure and report on KM program performance, including adoption rates, content usage, and knowledge gaps.
  • Collaborate with Practice Innovation, IT, Data Strategy, Research & Competitive Intelligence, Business Development, Pricing, Risk, Talent, and practice leadership to coordinate KM efforts.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of relevant experience in law firm knowledge management, practice management, or legal operations.
  • Strong understanding of law firm workflows, document lifecycle, precedent management, attorney adoption, and client service expectations.
  • Experience creating, governing, or improving reusable legal resources such as templates, precedents, clause banks, playbooks, checklists, matter profiles, or knowledge repositories.
  • Ability to work credibly with partners, associates, administrative leaders, product owners, IT, data, research, risk, and business development stakeholders.
  • Strong execution discipline, judgment, communication skills, and discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Firmwide KM strategy and execution; knowledge governance; AI-ready knowledge architecture; practice alignment; workflow design; cross-functional collaboration; attorney enablement; change management; sound professional judgment.
  • PREFERRED: Experience selecting, designing, implementing, or rolling out AI-enabled legal tools, document management systems, experience platforms, intranets, taxonomy, metadata, or legal workflow tools.
  • PREFERRED: Experience leading change management, attorney enablement, training, or adoption programs.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, technology, or JD preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to move around the office up to 15% of the time to make copies, fax, file, etc.
  • Stationery remains at least 85% of the time.
  • Requires frequent use of computers and office productivity machines (e.g., fax machine, copier, printer).
  • Occasionally required to move documents or files weighing up to 15 lbs.
  • Requires constant communication and exchange of information with the Firm attorneys, clients, and staff.
  • Requires inspecting and observing information on a computer screen at least 80% of the time.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid environment.
  • Occasional extended hours beyond the normal schedule may be required to meet firm or client needs.
